{"id":141,"date":"2019-07-17T18:17:54","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:17:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/alumni-featured-at-new-haven-opera-festival-debut\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:17:54","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:17:54","slug":"alumni-featured-at-new-haven-opera-festival-debut","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/alumni-featured-at-new-haven-opera-festival-debut\/","title":{"rendered":"WCSU 2016 &#8211; Alumni featured in Opera Palooza"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 Six graduates of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/default.asp\">Western Connecticut State University<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/music\/\">music program<\/a> competed successfully to  earn featured roles this summer singing classic arias at the inaugural <a href=\"http:\/\/www.operapaloozanhv.com\/\">Opera Palooza<\/a> festival on the New  Haven Green.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The debut of the festival, presented on Aug. 20, 2016, as a  celebration of New Haven\u2019s Italian immigrant and cultural heritage, included  performances of aria favorites by 10 emerging young singers and natives of  Connecticut who earned places in the Opera Palooza program based on competitive  judging of audition recording submissions.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Featured WCSU alumni, their native hometowns and the year  when they received the Bachelor of Music in Performance included: Jennifer  Caraluzzi, of Bethel, 2009; Karolina Wojteczko, of Derby, 2010; Benedetta  Cordaro, of Stamford, 2014; Erick Sanchez, of Stamford, 2014; Steve Valenzuela,  of Waterbury, 2016; and Charles Widmer, of Oxford, 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Current WCSU music student Edwin Rodriguez, of New Haven,  also sang \u201cThe Star Spangled Banner\u201d to open the Opera Palooza program.  Internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer, who has performed  leading roles in \u201cThe Marriage of Figaro\u201d and \u201cDer Rosenkavalier\u201d at the  Metropolitan Opera, served as host for the festival program. Musicians from  symphonies across the region formed a 30-member orchestra to provide  accompaniment for the aria performances.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><em>Western Connecticut  State University offers outstanding faculty in a       range of quality academic  programs.
