{"id":166,"date":"2019-07-17T18:17:57","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:17:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/art-of-biology-exhibit\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:17:57","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:17:57","slug":"art-of-biology-exhibit","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/art-of-biology-exhibit\/","title":{"rendered":"WCSU 2016 &#8211; Art of Biology exhibit"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/w\/newsevents\/images\/Biology display2016_2896.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignright\" \/>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/\">Western Connecticut State University<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/biology\/\">Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences<\/a> will host a  reception for the exhibition, \u201cThe Art of Biology,\u201d from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on  <strong>Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016<\/strong>, in the Atrium of the Science Building on the university\u2019s  Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The  exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will feature student  photography, pen and ink and watercolor work, as well as mounted taxidermy  specimens of birds, mammals and reptiles provided by the <a href=\"http:\/\/peabody.yale.edu\/\">Yale  Peabody Museum of Natural History<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Professor of Art <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/art\/tom.html\">Jack Tom<\/a>,  an illustration instructor at WCSU, said the idea for the event all began with  the desire to fill an empty display case in the lobby of the Science Building  with biological illustration and art to help promote a scientific illustration  class to biology students. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Through the collaboration between members of the  Biology and Art departments, the single display case in the lobby of the  Science Building eventually evolved into a full-blown art exhibit, celebrating  the marriage of art and science, and the practice of interdepartmental studies.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArt and science have a symbiotic relationship,\u201d Tom  said. \u201cThey\u2019re almost like siblings who\u2019ve been separated at birth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Tom also noted that scientific illustration is unique  in that artists are drawing for accuracy rather than emotional expression.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur students really do create field-guide quality  work,\u201d Tom said.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Professor of Biological and Environmental Sciences <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/biology\/faculty\/philbrick\/\">Dr. C.
