DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 Western Connecticut State University<\/a> will screen \u201cBeneath the Olive Tree<\/a>,\u201d recipient of the Sante Fe Film Festival\u2019s Best Documentary award, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, 2017<\/strong>, in Room 125 of the Science Building on the university\u2019s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The screening, hosted by the Center for the Study of Culture and Values<\/a> and sponsored by the Macricostas Family Foundation, will be free and the public is invited. A reception and opportunity to meet the director, Stavroula Toska<\/a>, will follow in the Science Building Atrium.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Narrated and produced by Olympia Dukakis<\/a>, \u201cBeneath the Olive Tree\u201d is a documentary about secret journals that were found buried beneath an olive tree on the island of Trikeri, which served as a concentration camp during the Greek civil war. The journals documented the experiences and stories of the women who were caught up in the Greek war in the 1940s. <\/p>\n

Associate Professor of Biological and Environmental Sciences Dr. Theodora Pinou<\/a> organized the screening, and explained the significance of this documentary: \u201cIt\u2019s a great film that demonstrates the complexity of nation building and the struggles of women in this endeavor. It also shows the importance of leaving behind a written legacy often uncovered in letters and diaries, an art that is often forgotten in today\u2019s digital world.\u201d<\/p>\n
