{"id":229,"date":"2019-07-17T18:18:02","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/business-plan-wins-top-award\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:18:02","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:02","slug":"business-plan-wins-top-award","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/business-plan-wins-top-award\/","title":{"rendered":"WCSU  2016 &#8211; Business plan wins top award"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/\"> Western Connecticut State  University<\/a> students Rachael Karp and Helen Christie Roberts earned the Best  Oral Presentation Award for their pitch of Karp\u2019s product innovation, \u201cOn  Board,\u201d at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entrepreneurshipfoundation.org\/competition.html\">Connecticut  Business Plan Competition<\/a> held on April 22, 2016, in New Haven.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/w\/newsevents\/images\/Roberts, Karp, Assenza at CT Business Plan Competition.jpg\" alt=\"Image of students Rachael Karp and Helen Christie Roberts with Dr. Pauline Assenza\" width=\"510\" height=\"342\" align=\"right\" \/>Karp and Roberts prevailed in the competition finals over  business plan presentations by 10 other student teams from Connecticut colleges  including Yale University, the University of Connecticut, Quinnipiac  University, the University of Hartford, Fairfield University, Central  Connecticut State University and the University of Bridgeport. They qualified  for the finals after their written executive summary made the cut among 26  student project submissions.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Karp, a Hamden resident who is pursuing a dual major in  technical theatre and marketing, originated the concept to develop \u201cOn Board,\u201d  a modular headboard system designed to customize college students\u2019 use of their  dormitory beds as study space by providing accessories including a cup holder,  book light, charger for electronic devices and storage pouch. After her  successful presentation of the product concept at the WCSU Marketing Club \u201cBig  Idea\u201d competition last fall, Karp produced a prototype with support from  Western faculty advisers and use of the Danbury Hackerspace. Roberts, a Wilton  resident who is majoring in social science, teamed up with Karp to survey more  than 250 WCSU students this spring to validate potential demand for the  product, and space has been negotiated in the WCSU bookstore for sale of the  initial \u201cOn Board\u201d units to be produced.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p> Dr. Pauline Assenza, associate professor of management and  adviser to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newstimes.com\/business\/article\/New-business-center-to-focus-on-innovation-in-6857099.php\">Entrepreneurship,  Research and Innovation Center<\/a> (ERIC) student club at WCSU, served as  faculty mentor to Karp and Roberts for the competition. Karp is the current  president of ERIC, founded last year to seek out entrepreneurial and other  creative opportunities for WCSU students and facilitate partnerships between  students and local business mentors.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The Connecticut Business Plan Competition is sponsored by  the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entrepreneurshipfoundation.org\/home.html\">Entrepreneurship  Foundation Inc.<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entrepreneurshipfoundation.org\/educator-resources.html\">Connecticut  Consortium of Entrepreneurship Educators<\/a>.
