DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 A founding member of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation<\/a>, journalist and author Vito Russo<\/a> was a forerunner during a crucial period of social change and author of \u201cThe Celluloid Closet: Homosexuality in the Movies<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael Schiavi<\/a>, author of \u201cCelluloid Activist: The Life and Times of Vito Russo<\/a>,\u201d tells Russo\u2019s life story from his childhood in East Harlem to his living with HIV\/AIDS. Schiavi, a professor from the New York Institute of Technology, will be on the campus of Western Connecticut State University<\/a> at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012,<\/strong> to discuss Russo as a man who helped define gay-rights and AIDS activism.<\/p>\n

The event is free and open to the public and will be held in the Student Center Theater on the university\u2019s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The event is sponsored by the WCSU Office of Multicultural Affairs and Associate Professor of English and co-director of American Studies Dr. Don Gagnon. <\/p>\n

Published in 2011 by University of Wisconsin Press, Schiavi\u2019s biographical work has received critical acclaim and has been hailed as \u201cone of the most complex and compelling historical narratives of gay male life and culture in the later decades of the twentieth century,\u201d by Cineaste<\/a> magazine.<\/p>\n
