{"id":283,"date":"2019-07-17T18:18:06","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/compassion-and-creativity-in-education-conference\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:18:06","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:06","slug":"compassion-and-creativity-in-education-conference","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/compassion-and-creativity-in-education-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"WCSU 2017 &#8211; Compassion and creativity in education conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/default.asp\">Western Connecticut State University<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/graduate\/EDD\/\">Doctorate of Education in Instructional Leadership<\/a> program, WCSU <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/catalogs\/graduate\/sps\/programs\/master-of-science-degree-program-in-counselor-education\/\">Counselor Education<\/a>, WCSU <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/sw\/\">Department of  Social Work<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnkldharma.org\/\">Do Ngak  Kunphen Ling Tibetan Buddhist Center for Universal Peace<\/a> (DNKL) and  the WCSU <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/compassioncreativity\/\">Center for Compassion, Creativity &amp; Innovation<\/a> will  host the \u201cNurturing Compassion &amp; Creativity in Education Conference.\u201d The two-day  event will take place on <strong>Friday April 28, and Saturday, April 29, 2017<\/strong>, from 8 a.m.  to 4 p.m. in Warner Hall and White Hall on the university\u2019s Midtown campus, 181  White St. in Danbury. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The conference will feature a  variety of breakout sessions and a keynote address by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jesselewischooselove.org\/about\/board-of-directors\/scarlett-lewis\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"http:\/\/www.jesselewischooselove.org\/about\/board-of-directors\/scarlett-lewis\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scarlett Lewis<\/a>\u00a0on \u201cChoosing Love.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>WCSU Associate Professor of Education and Educational Psychology <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/sps\/fbiostewart.asp\">Dr.  Tricia J. Stewart<\/a> will be a featured presenter at the conference. \u201cThe  event,\u201d Stewart said, \u201cwill offer a unique opportunity for educators and those  interested in compassion and creativity when working with schools to experience  theoretical and hands-on practices. It brings together a wide range of  presenters and promises to be engaging and informative.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Breakout  sessions provide opportunities for education professionals, researchers,  advocates and others interested in compassionate and creative education to  learn, network and engage. The sessions will include \u201cIntegrating Yoga &amp;  Mindfulness in Schools,\u201d \u201cDeveloping Social Emotional Learning in Students,\u201d \u201cMindfulness  for Educators,\u201d \u201cCompassion in Practice,\u201d \u201cCompassion &amp; Analytical  Selective-Focus Skills,\u201d \u201cTeaching Compassion in Children with Comfort Dogs,\u201d  an update on the TeachLive Lab, \u201cCreating Enrichment Academies in Elementary  Schools\u201d and \u201cCultivating Cultural Awareness in Middle School Students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Featured presenters include WCSU Health  Promotion and Exercise Sciences Faculty &amp; Staff Wellness Program  Coordinator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/hpx\/wellnessprogram.asp\">Christel Autuori<\/a>; Wooster  School Head of Lower School, Head  of Prospect and Bridge Programs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.woosterschool.org\/page.cfm?p=577&amp;viewdirid=2848\">Dr. Stephanie Bell<\/a>; WCSU Department of Education and Educational Psychology Coordinator and Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/education\/faculty\/marcia-delcourt.asp\">Dr. Marcia Delcourt<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/dnkldharma.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DNKL<\/a> Director <a href=\"http:\/\/dnkldharma.org\/teachers.html\">Geshe Lobsang Dhargey<\/a>; Danbury  Public Schools Deputy  Superintendent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danbury.k12.ct.us\/bbadmin\/admindirect.html\">Dr. Bill Glass<\/a>; clinical social worker  and George Mason University Adjunct Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/chhs.gmu.edu\/faculty-and-staff\/hurley.cfm\">Wilson C. Stewart<\/a>;  and others. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Scarlett Lewis is  the mother of Jesse Lewis who was killed in his first-grade classroom at Sandy  Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. She founded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jesselewischooselove.org\/\">The Jesse Lewis Choose Love  Foundation<\/a>\u00a0in  honor of Jesse to promote social and emotional education in schools and a  consistent message of compassion in our communities. Lewis is the recipient of  the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marinij.com\/marinnews\/ci_26260875\/sandy-hook-mom-honored-marin-international-forgiveness-day\">International  Forgiveness Award<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.liveyourlegacysummit.com\/\">Live  Your Legacy Award\u00a0<\/a>and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfcg.org\/events\/2014-common-ground-awards\/\">Common Ground  Award\u00a0<\/a>for her advocacy work  for peace and forgiveness. After Jesse\u2019s death, Scarlett wrote\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hayhouse.com\/nurturing-healing-love\">Nurturing Healing Love<\/a>,\u201d a story about her journey of turning personal  tragedy into something that can positively impact the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Participants may register online at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/tickets\">wcsu.edu\/tickets<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Tickets for  WCSU students are $25 per day. For the general public, tickets are $62.50 for  each day.
