{"id":301,"date":"2019-07-17T18:18:08","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/crossingborders\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:18:08","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:08","slug":"crossingborders","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/crossingborders\/","title":{"rendered":"WCSU to show documentary &#8216;Crossing Borders&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0\"><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014  Western Connecticut State University will show \u201cCrossing Borders\u201d at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6, in Room 125 of the Science Building on the university&#8217;s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&#013;<br \/>\n  \u201cCrossing Borders,\u201d directed by German filmmaker Arnd W\u00e4chter, documents the story of four American and four Moroccan college students who travel together through Morocco. Through intimate discussions on race, religion and other socio-cultural issues between the students, the film probes into Muslims\u2019 and Americans\u2019 views of each other. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&#013;<br \/>\n  The documentary has received global attention, winning awards in United States film festivals including the Illinois International Film Festival and the Honolulu Film Festival.  In Greece, the film was featured in the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0\">&#013;<br \/>\n  Assistant Professor of Social Sciences Dr. Damla Isik, who will attend the screening along with students from her anthropology class, emphasized the film\u2019s significance. \u201cWhat stood out for me is how relatable and important it would be for students at WestConn, especially those who are interested in studying abroad and cultural exchange programs,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0\">Enthused about the documentary\u2019s emphasis on culture, Isik said, \u201cI was thrilled that it offers a difference perspective from the \u2018clash of civilizations\u2019 \u2014 where the East supposedly clashes with the West.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&#013;<br \/>\n  A discussion with director Arnd W\u00e4chter and Isik will follow the documentary.
