DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 Western Connecticut State University<\/a> Associate Professor of Nursing Dr. Mary Ellen Doherty<\/a> will sign copies of her recently published book, \u201cNurses in War: Voices from Iraq and Afghanistan<\/a>,\u201d at an event to be held at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012<\/strong>. The public is invited to attend the book signing on the first floor of Warner Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Doherty is the co-author of \u201cNurses in War\u201d with her sister and research colleague, Dr. Elizabeth Scannell-Desch, a retired colonel in the U.S. Air Force Nurse Corps and nursing professor at Adelphi University. The book, released in April by Springer Publishing Co., explores the experiences of U.S. military nurses during deployments in those war zones from 2003 to 2011.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A Ph.D. recipient from the University of Rhode Island and member of the WCSU nursing faculty since 2008, Doherty has conducted extensive research in the areas of childbearing and women\u2019s health, and holds certifications as a nurse-midwife, family nurse-practitioner, and maternal-newborn clinical nurse specialist. She was named the WCSU recipient of the 2012 Board of Regents\/Connecticut State University Norton Mezvinsky Research Award for her research focusing on \u201cunderstudied populations.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cIn reading this book, we hope that readers will see, feel and get as close as they can to the experiences of these nurses in war,\u201d Doherty said. \u201cThis book is not about what two professors think that nurses may have been feeling at war \u2014 these are the words of the nurses who were there. The nurses tell their own stories.\u201d<\/p>\n
