{"id":342,"date":"2019-07-17T18:18:11","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/dyerexhibit\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:18:11","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:11","slug":"dyerexhibit","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/dyerexhibit\/","title":{"rendered":"2012 Western to exhibit talents and triumphs of late Danbury mayor"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014  The political life of the late former Danbury mayor James Dyer started many years ago on the campus of Western Connecticut State University.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Dyer\u2019s election as vice president of the university\u2019s Student Government Association was just the beginning of a long career of public service that included an appointment to the Connecticut State University System Board of Trustees and state and local government offices.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>As a tribute to Dyer\u2019s lifetime dedication to the community, Western has set up an exhibit showcasing his life from the classroom to the political arena. The exhibit will be in the first floor of the Ruth A. Haas Memorial Library on the university\u2019s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury from <strong>Friday, Feb. 3, through Friday, Feb. 24, 2012<\/strong>. A reception will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe collection is a cross section of the material that Jim Dyer donated to us last year,\u201d said Brian Stephens, archivist at WCSU\u2019s Haas Library. \u201cHis collection \u2014 75 linear feet of material \u2014 can give researchers an in-depth and unique look at the climate here at Western in the early \u201870s and the socio-political landscape of Danbury during his terms as mayor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Dyer served four terms as Danbury\u2019s mayor from 1979 to 1987. He died unexpectedly in July 2011 at age 64.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Among Dyer\u2019s collection are posters, pins, bumper stickers, photos, letters and awards that will represent three areas: his life at Western, his life in politics and Western during the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>For more information, contact the Office of University Relations at (203) 837-8486.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>Western Connecticut State University offers outstanding faculty in a range of quality academic programs.
