{"id":383,"date":"2019-07-17T18:18:14","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/fall-semester-artist-lecture-series\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:18:14","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:14","slug":"fall-semester-artist-lecture-series","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/fall-semester-artist-lecture-series\/","title":{"rendered":"WCSU 2016 &#8211; Fall artist lecture series"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 Critically acclaimed illustrators whose works range from  subway art to children\u2019s book drawings and painters whose works are shown in  museums, galleries and private collections around the world will discuss their  artistic vision and creative process during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/\">Western  Connecticut State University<\/a> fall semester Master of Fine Arts lecture series  continuing from September through November, 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The series also will feature the curator of the Aldrich  Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, who pioneered the movement to organize  pop-up exhibitions in the vibrant art center of New York City. All lectures,  sponsored by the WCSU <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/art\/\">Department of Art<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/art\/mfa\/\">M.F.A. in Visual Arts<\/a> program, will be at  11 a.m. in Room 144 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/svpa\/svpa-center-info.asp\">Visual and Performing Arts  Center<\/a> on the university\u2019s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in  Danbury. Admission will be free and the public is invited.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The series will begin at 11 a.m. on <strong>Wednesday, Sept. 14,<\/strong> with a lecture by illustrator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marcoschin.com\/\">Marcos Chin<\/a>, whose widely recognized  popular art works include his 2013 piece \u201cGrand Central Catwalk\u201d shown in the  New York City subway system as part of the Metropolitan Transit Authority\u2019s Art  for Transit program. A graduate of Ontario College of Art and Design in  Toronto, Canada, Chin\u2019s illustrations have reached an international audience as  art work for magazines and fashion catalogues, textile and surface designs,  book and CD covers, and advertisements.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Chin has exhibited his works at galleries in New York,  Mexico and the Netherlands and has published books with Harper Collins and  Viking Books. He has earned international recognition as recipient of gold and  silver medals from the Society of Illustrators in New York and a gold medal  from the Society of Publication Designers. He has taught at the School of  Visual Arts in New York since 2006, and has presented lectures and workshops  across the United States and abroad.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Other presentations featured in the fall 2016 M.FA. artist  lecture series will include:<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wednesday,  Sept. 28: <\/strong>Painter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hilarydoyle.com\/\">Hilary Doyle<\/a>,  who lives and works in Brooklyn, has staged numerous exhibitions at galleries  in New York and at diverse venues across the country including universities,  art centers and galleries in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania,  Maryland, Texas and Virginia. She mounted a solo show, \u201cEverything\u2019s a Little  Off,\u201d at Brown University. Recipient of an M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School  of Design and a fellowship from the Vermont Studio Center, she has curated  exhibitions at Projekt722 in Brooklyn and at RISD. She is an art instructor at  SUNY Purchase College and RISD, and will serve as an artist in residence in  2017 at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<p>&#013;\n    <\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Monday, Oct.  10: <\/strong>Painter <a href=\"http:\/\/ericholzman.com\/\">Eric Holzman<\/a>, a Bronx  native who now resides in Manhattan, has received widespread critical acclaim  for his works exhibited widely across the United States and in Europe during  the past four decades. Recognitions for his works have included awards of the  Atlantic Pacific Fellowship, the Guggenheim Fellowship and grants from Tiffany  and the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2008 he received the highest honors  bestowed by the National Academy of Design and the American Academy of Arts and  Letters. His recent shows have been featured at elite New York galleries  including Lori Brookstein, Sideshow, Jason McCoy and Tibor D\u2019Nagy. He has  served as an instructor at WCSU and other institutions including the New York  Studio School, Pratt Institute, Bard College and SUNY Purchase. \u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<p>&#013;\n  <\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Wednesday, Oct. 26: <\/strong>Illustrator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jdecker.com\/\">Jacqueline Decker<\/a>, a resident of Litchfield,  has established an international reputation during the past two decades for her  exquisitely designed and richly imaginative illustrations for children\u2019s books  as well as a wide range of children\u2019s products. Founder of Jacqueline Decker  Designs, her illustrations have appeared in books published by Harcourt,  Houghton Mifflin, Macmillan, McGraw-Hill, the Smithsonian Institute and Oxford  University Press, and her commercial art work has appeared on products ranging  from fabrics to ornaments, dinnerware and paper goods. Recipient of an M.F.A.  from the Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford, she serves on the  faculty of Tunxis Community College and previously taught at WCSU.<\/li>\n<p>&#013;\n    <\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Monday, Nov. 7: <\/strong>Painter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tonkonow.com\/cutler_cv.html\">Amy Cutler\u2019s<\/a> extensive  portfolio of art works has earned a place in major public collections including  the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum  of American Art in New York; the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington;  Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt, Germany; the Reina Sofia national museum in Madrid,  Spain; and leading museums in 14 states across America. She has exhibited internationally  in numerous group shows since 1997, and has mounted 22 solo and two-artist  exhibitions across the United States and abroad since 2000. Recipient of a  B.F.A. from Cooper Union, Cutler is represented in New York by Leslie Tonkonow  Artworks + Projects, where she recently presented a collaborative multimedia  installation, \u201cFossa,\u201d commissioned by SITE Santa Fe as part of the New Mexico  institution\u2019s 20th anniversary celebration. Her exhibitions during  the past year also have included participation in the \u201cDrawing Now\u201d exhibitions  presented at the Albertina Museum in Vienna, Austria, and the Stedelijk Museum  in Ghent, Belgium.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<p>&#013;\n    <\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Monday, Nov. 21: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/amt.parsons.edu\/finearts\/visitingcritics\/amy-smith%C2%AD-stewart\/\">Amy  Smith-Stewart<\/a> has served as curator of the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum  in Ridgefield since 2013, where she has arranged exhibitions including artist  Ruth Root\u2019s first solo show, \u201cOld, Odd and Oval,\u201d and artist Jackie Winsor\u2019s  first museum show since 1997. Recipient of a master\u2019s degree from Sotheby\u2019s  Institute of Art in London, she has curated more than 60 gallery and museum  exhibitions during a career that includes tenures at the MoMA PS1 and Mary  Boone Gallery in New York. She founded the nomadic New York gallery  Smith-Stewart, which became an early model for organizing pop-up exhibitions in  major art centers such as Manhattan.
