{"id":393,"date":"2019-07-17T18:18:15","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/feastofsevenfishes\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:18:15","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:15","slug":"feastofsevenfishes","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/feastofsevenfishes\/","title":{"rendered":"2012 &#8216;Feast of Seven Fishes&#8217; to be held at WCSU"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 A traditional \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.italianfoodforever.com\/2011\/12\/feast-of-the-seven-fishes\/\">Feast of Seven Fishes<\/a>\u201d will be served up just in time for the holidays at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/\">Western Connecticut State University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>At 7 p.m. on <strong>Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012<\/strong>, Patrizia Farina, world languages instructor at the university, will give a talk about the history of the medieval tradition that began in Southern Italy and made its way to the holiday tables of many Italian-American families.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>This will be the second <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/ia\/development.asp\">John F. Azzariti Memorial Lecture<\/a>, presented in honor of Azzariti by his wife, Katie Azzariti and WCSU. The lecture and dinner will be in the Westside Campus Center Ballroom on the university\u2019s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. The event will be free and open to the public, but reservations are required. Donations will be accepted.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The seven fishes meal usually includes baccala (a type of cod), smelts, squid and eel.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese were things that were available at the time the tradition began,\u201d Farina said. \u201cPeople were not rich and the fish was there, all you had to do was catch it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Farina, who is from Italy, will talk about not only the historical meaning of the tradition, but why the number seven is significant. In addition to a guest chef and wine pairings and tastings, a group of WCSU theatre arts students will sing traditional Christmas carols in Italian.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a fun night,\u201d Farina said.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>For more information, call  (203) 829-6191.
