{"id":442,"date":"2019-07-17T18:18:23","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/hpxinternshipfair\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:18:23","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:23","slug":"hpxinternshipfair","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/hpxinternshipfair\/","title":{"rendered":"2013 WCSU Department of Health Promotion and Exercise Sciences to showcase student internship experiences"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/\">Western  Connecticut State University<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/hpx\/\">Department  of Health Promotion and Exercise Sciences<\/a> will host an internship fair at  10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3, on the first floor of Warner Hall on the  university\u2019s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The fair will feature tri-fold  posters displaying information about internship projects undertaken by students  in the department and pictures of the interns working with clients in the  community. The event will be free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Students  whose internships will be featured include:<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Caitlin Avery:<\/strong> Interning  at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bgchartford.com\/\">Boys &amp; Girls Club of Hartford<\/a>, Avery assisted  the teen director in planning events such as college tours, open houses and  teen-focused programs. Some of her other responsibilities included scheduling,  recruiting, setting up and implementing the different events.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rachel Babecki:\u00a0<\/strong>Interning in the  human resources department at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diageo.com\/en-row\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Diageo<\/a> in Norwalk, Babecki  worked directly with the employee benefits team to develop strategies to  increase company leadership, as well as employee commitment, to health and  wellness. \u201cI am extremely grateful for the time I have spent at Diageo,\u201d  Babecki said, \u201cand feel fortunate to have learned so much in such a short  time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong \/><strong>Nicole Bounty:<\/strong>  Interning  at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.westernconnecticuthealthnetwork.org\/\">Western  Connecticut Health Network<\/a>, Bounty\u2019s responsibilities included preparing  marketing materials, organizing and assessing employee participation data,  creating informational health presentations and planning wellness events. \u201cI  appreciate the opportunity to learn more about applying wellness to a real-world  setting,\u201d Bounty said, \u201cand know I am in a great atmosphere to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Iliana Cartagna:\u00a0<\/strong>Interning at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/ppsne\/\">Planned Parenthood of Southern New  England<\/a>,  Cartagna recorded patients\u2019 height, weight, pulse and blood pressure to prepare  them for their clinician. She also observed counseling sessions for the  patients.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong \/><strong>Jessica Caturano: <\/strong>Interning at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/campustour\/westside\/oc.asp\">WCSU\u2019s O\u2019Neill Center<\/a>, Caturano organized  and coordinated Western\u2019s women\u2019s volleyball games and men\u2019s and women\u2019s  basketball games for the Athletic Department, as well as concerts, fairs, home  shows, keynote speakers and other events held at the arena. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong \/><strong>Caitlin Coyle:\u00a0<\/strong>Interning at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danburyhospital.org\/Our-Services\/Occupational-Health-Services.aspx\">Corporate Health  Care<\/a>,  a division of Western Connecticut Health Network, Coyle was in charge of  conducting a wellness program for the employees and motivating them to  participate. She learned how to make appointments, check patients in and out,  scan patients\u2019 charts electronically and conduct hair and urine drug  tests.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong \/><strong>Jacquiline Darkwa:\u00a0<\/strong>Interning at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gsofct.org\/\">Girl  Scouts of Connecticut<\/a>,  Darkwa worked with girls from kindergarten through eighth grade and devised  lesson plans that the girls could participate in to earn badges. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong \/><strong>Richard Darr:\u00a0<\/strong>Interning at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.regionalymca.org\/\">Regional YMCA<\/a>, Darr was  involved with teaching youth sports, overseeing the wellness and fitness rooms,  and external marketing and advertising for the organizational program \u201cLose to  Win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong \/><strong>Bianca DeSimone:<\/strong> Interning  at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gsofct.org\/\">Girl Scouts of Connecticut<\/a>, DeSimone was  responsible for planning and implementing programs for girls in underserved  communities who would not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in Girl  Scouts. She also provided adults with information about volunteering  opportunities, and registered girls at program sites. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong \/><strong>Amanda Genova: <\/strong>Interning at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plusonehealthmanagement.com\/\">Plus One<\/a> in Bethel,  Genova helped others with their goals, lifestyle requirements and physical  limitations through assisting and partaking in one-on-one individual personal  training, as well as class group training. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong \/><strong>Amanda Ghannam:<\/strong>\u00a0Interning  at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ridgefieldphysicaltherapy.com\/\">Ridgefield  Physical Therapy<\/a>,  Ghannam worked as a physical therapist and was responsible for setting up each  patient\u2019s exercise routine before the patient arrived, answering phones, making  appointments, taking in new patients, cleaning all equipment, laundry and  filing patient charts.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong \/><strong>Michaela Hastings:<\/strong>\u00a0Interning  as a health coach, Hastings is attempting to build a health coaching business.  For her internship, Hastings marketed her business through Facebook and email  newsletters. She created workshops on various nutrition topics and used them to  attract clients. Whole Foods used recipes Hastings created for the company\u2019s  newsletters.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong \/><strong>Michael Littlefield:\u00a0<\/strong>Interning at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cga.edu\/\">United States Coast Guard Academy<\/a>, Littlefield  assisted the strength and conditioning coach with developing, teaching and  running the strength programs for the sports teams. He also worked with the  athletes daily to help develop speed, strength, power and skills that would  translate directly to their physical performance.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ryan Markward:<\/strong>\u00a0 Interning  for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthgrades.com\/physician\/dr-pacey-pet-yy7ff\">Dr. Pacey Pet<\/a> of New Milford,  Markward learned how to work the front desk (file patient charts, schedule\/bill  patients, etc.), in addition to working with the medical assistants by rooming  patients and taking their vital signs. \u201cGathering all of this knowledge will  further aid me in becoming a physician assistant,\u201d Markward said.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong \/><strong>Marty Noenickx:\u00a0<\/strong>Interning at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atriaseniorliving.com\/\">Atria<\/a>, a Benchmark senior living  community, Noenickx worked in the recreational therapy department and assisted  with elder care. Noenickx also tested residents\u2019 dementia and memory loss. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong \/><strong>Jennifer Ritch:<\/strong>\u00a0Interning  at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boehringer-ingelheim.com\/\">Boehringer  Ingelheim<\/a>,  Ritch worked with the wellness staff to assist with events and services  provided by the company, as well as with the implementation of health, wellness  and fitness programs.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong \/><strong>Matt Rosbrough:\u00a0<\/strong>Interning at the <a href=\"http:\/\/nyasportsfitness.com\/\">Newtown Youth Academy<\/a>, Rosbrough did  walking and resistance band training with people age 55 and older twice a week  for eight weeks. He also created a home-exercise program using resistance  bands. \u201cGiving the older adults a training program to become more physically  active was a great opportunity for me to educate and motivate them,\u201d Rosbrough  said.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong \/><strong>Marshall Rose:<\/strong>\u00a0Interning  at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluestreakst.com\/\">Blue Streak Sports Training<\/a>, Rose was  responsible for creating a youth strength-training circuit and working with  athletes to improve their strength, endurance, speed, agility, plyometrics,  reaction speed and explosiveness. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jamie Trayer:<\/strong>\u00a0Interning  at <a href=\"http:\/\/athletics.greenmtn.edu\/insideAthletics\/Facilities\/home\">Green  Mountain College<\/a> in Vermont, Trayer was responsible for working personally  with the head strength and conditioning coach, and assisting with coaching and  training athletes to become stronger, while reducing the risk of injury. \u201cI am  extremely grateful for the time spent with both my preceptor and the athletic  staff and the opportunity to learn as much as I did, all while maintaining the  utmost respect and professionalism while representing Green Mountain College,\u201d  Trayer said.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>For  more information, call the Office of University Relations at (203) 837-8486.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><strong><em \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>      Western Connecticut State University offers outstanding faculty in a range of quality academic programs.
