DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 Dr. Carol Hawkes has held many roles at Western Connecticut State University<\/a>. During her 24-year tenure, she\u2019s worn the hat of Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Last year, Hawkes, 90, retired as Founding Dean of the School of Visual and Performing Arts. But not before making sure the foundation was set, literally, for the school\u2019s new building on the university\u2019s Westside campus.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

For all of her years of tireless dedication and loyalty, Hawkes will be awarded The President\u2019s Medal by President James W. Schmotter at this year\u2019s commencement ceremony, May 13, 2012.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat she has brought us is wisdom, experience and an understanding of what quality in higher education means,\u201d said Schmotter. \u201cShe\u2019s a totally classy person who is a role model for how to behave in any professional setting.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Hawkes earned her bachelor\u2019s degree from Barnard College and later completed her doctorate at Columbia University. Her first post was as English professor and department chair at Finch College. She later became vice president of Hartwick College and then president of Endicott College.<\/p>\n
