Additionally, Hegel-Cantarella won the 2017 BOR Teaching Award, which  recognizes faculty at each <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ct.edu\">Connecticut State Colleges  and Universities<\/a> institution who have distinguished themselves as  outstanding teachers, and who have initiated and promoted instructional improvements  for their programs.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Hegel-Cantarella earned an MPhil and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the Graduate  Center of the City University of New York.\u00a0At WCSU, she teaches courses on  legal anthropology, economic anthropology, qualitative research methods, social  theory and the Middle East. In 2016, she developed an ethnographic field  course, a four-week study abroad opportunity on the island of Barbados, during  which students learn to conduct anthropological research.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI  have been honored to teach and mentor so many students who inspire me with  their curiosity and willingness to exceed my expectations,\u201d Hegel-Cantarella said. \u201cTaking students overseas was a new  adventure that I look forward to doing again. My students were not just  learning to do interviews, observational research and data analysis, but also  learning to be bold and adaptable. It was thrilling to see them dive into  research projects in villages across the island.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Hegel-Cantarella  noted that the sustained and rich interaction with students at WCSU has shaped  her approach to teaching. \u201cI have found that students respond well to  collaborative learning and invest more deeply in their own processes of  discovery and problem-solving when they work together.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Hegel-Cantarella has\u00a0been awarded  research grants from the National Science Foundation, the Social Science  Research Council, and the Fulbright Commission to conduct\u00a0ethnographic  research in in Cairo and Port Said, Egypt, and has published in \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iupress.indiana.edu\/product_info.php?products_id=806736\">Anthropology  of the Middle East and North Africa:\u00a0Into the New Millennium<\/a>,\u201d  \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Family-Law-Islam-Divorce-Marriage\/dp\/1784536261\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1493045415&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=9780857721273\">Family Law  in Islam<\/a>\u201d  and the <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/home\/lch\">Law, Culture  and the Humanities<\/a> journal. She also collaborates with  designers on experimental research projects and is finishing a manuscript on  this work entitled \u201cEthnography by Design: Dispatches from the Productive  Encounters Studio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>In her recommendation of Hegel-Cantarella to the BOR, Professor  of Social Sciences <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/socialsci\/faculty.asp\">Dr.  Carina Bandhauer<\/a> said that Hegel-Cantarella\u2019s classroom \u201creveals a  professor who is engaged, lighthearted, warm and bonded with her students, whom  she successfully molds into functioning, cohesive groups of learners building  intellect, confidence and skills. One of the most demonstrative examples of her  positive influence has been her recent development of an ethnographic field  school in Barbados where she taught students this past summer. They returned  with research and critical analytical skills that markedly improved their  senior theses.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a member  of the\u00a0BOR\u00a0Awards Committee,\u201d Associate  Vice President for Academic Affairs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/president\/staff.asp\">Dr. Ann J. Atkinson<\/a> said, \u201cit\u2019s  rewarding to learn about our faculty\u2019s innovative teaching methods and  impressive research projects. Since 2007, eight WCSU professors have been  recognized by our campus and gone on to win the system award as well. It\u2019s  clear that we are achieving our mission to \u2018change lives by providing all  students with a high-quality education that fosters their growth as individuals,  scholars, professionals and leaders in a global society.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The awardees were  introduced and recognized at the BOR Faculty Advisory Committee\u2019s Annual  Conference at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccsu.edu\">Central Connecticut State University<\/a> on April 7. The awards presentation was led by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ct.edu\/regents\/members\/merle_w._harris\">Regent Merle Harris<\/a>, chair of the Academic &amp; Student  Affairs Committee, accompanied by other regents and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ct.edu\/about\/leadership\/mark_e._ojakian\">CSCU President Mark Ojakian<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><em>Western Connecticut State  University offers outstanding faculty in a range of quality academic programs.
