{"id":465,"date":"2019-07-17T18:18:21","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/hispanic-awareness-month-lecture\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:18:21","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:21","slug":"hispanic-awareness-month-lecture","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/hispanic-awareness-month-lecture\/","title":{"rendered":"WCSU 2016 &#8211; WCSU to host Hispanic Awareness Month lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/\">Western Connecticut State University<\/a> will host  nationally recognized illustrator, artist and educator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/artalumni\/professors\/echevarriaa.asp\">Abe Echevarria<\/a> for an Hispanic Awareness Month lecture at 5:30 p.m. on <strong>Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016<\/strong>, in  Room 108 of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university\u2019s Westside  campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Echevarria,  former chair of the WCSU Art Department and a professor of Art, taught and  mentored both undergraduate and graduate students in graphic design,  illustration and applied studio. He will present some of his work, share his  story about how he became an artist and educator, and provide career advice. Coming  from a Latino background, his career has been greatly influenced by his  experiences growing up. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Daryl  Dennis, WCSU\u2019s chief diversity officer and interim associate vice president for  Multicultural Affairs, said, \u201cAbe\u2019s personal experience being Hispanic in that  field was a story I thought should be shared with a larger audience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Echevarria  has worked for a diverse list of clients covering the corporate world, book  publishers, movie studios and ad agencies. His work is collected by public and  private patrons, such as American Express, NBC, CBS, AT&amp;T and Universal  Pictures. Additionally his published work includes book illustrations for \u201cBailout,  The Bankrupting of America,\u201d \u201cCounting Sheep\u201d and \u201cEssentials of Anatomy &amp;  Physiology.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Echevarria  has a long list of exhibitions and awards, including the International Gold  Medal Winner Auction, Society of Illustrators, New York; The Award of  Excellence 31, Society of Illustrators, New York; and the Latino Perspective,  Western Connecticut State University. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The  presentation, part of the university&#8217;s Cultural Connections Series, will be  free and open to the public.
