{"id":556,"date":"2019-07-17T18:18:29","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/kcactfrecap\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:18:29","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:29","slug":"kcactfrecap","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/kcactfrecap\/","title":{"rendered":"2012 KCACTF Recap"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014  Western\u2019s department of theatre arts ended the year &#013;<br \/>\n  on a high note. &#013;<br \/>\n  Fresh off the critically acclaimed three-week run of &#013;<br \/>\n  \u201cSweeney Todd\u201d and having just staged a 10-Minute &#013;<br \/>\n  Play Festival and a production of Charles Dickens\u2019 &#013;<br \/>\n  \u201cA Christmas Carol,\u201d the department received some &#013;<br \/>\n  exciting news at the end of December.  <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Sweeney Todd\u2019 was chosen to be part of the Kennedy &#013;<br \/>\n  Center American College Theatre Festival\u2019s &#013;<br \/>\n  (KCACTF) regional festival in Fitchburg, Mass., &#013;<br \/>\n  announced Sal Trapani, co-chairman of the WCSU &#013;<br \/>\n  department of theatre arts. \u201c\u2018The Three Sisters,\u2019 the department\u2019s spring 2011 production, also was selected as an alternate production. These are great &#013;<br \/>\n  honors for our university and our students and &#013;<br \/>\n  faculty,\u201d Trapani added.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>  WCSU sent 75 students and seven faculty members &#013;<br \/>\n  to Massachusetts to participate in the festival in &#013;<br \/>\n  late January. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cThere was a packed house of 1,000 for \u2018Sweeney Todd\u2019 at the Stratos G. Dukakis Performing Arts &#013;<br \/>\n  Center in Fitchburg,\u201d Trapani reported from &#013;<br \/>\n  Massachusetts. \u201cIt was a wonderful performance. &#013;<br \/>\n  The orchestra was fantastic, the acting and singing &#013;<br \/>\n  were brilliant, the technical crew was flawless. &#013;<br \/>\n  The audience stood immediately and kept on &#013;<br \/>\n  applauding. It was a very moving experience &#013;<br \/>\n  for our company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0\">&#013;<br \/>\n  The performance was rewarded with the KCACTF &#013;<br \/>\n  Region I Golden Hammer award, acknowledging &#013;<br \/>\n  \u201coutstanding skill and knowledge of backstage &#013;<br \/>\n  theatrical practices.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cAt the same time \u2018Sweeney Todd\u2019 was going on, we &#013;<br \/>\n  had our seven Irene Ryan nominees and partners &#013;<br \/>\n  competing in the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship &#013;<br \/>\n  Competition,\u201d Trapani said. \u201cWe also had two &#013;<br \/>\n  students competing in the Musical Theatre Initiative &#013;<br \/>\n  and six students competing in various technical &#013;<br \/>\n  competitions, adjudicated by theatre professionals &#013;<br \/>\n  from around the country. The winners in these categories will compete for the national awards at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0\">&#013;<br \/>\n  Vincent McCoy was a finalist for the Irene Ryan &#013;<br \/>\n  Region I Acting Award and the recipient of the VASTA &#013;<br \/>\n  Acting Award for Voice and Speech.  <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Camarero received Honorable Mention for Costume Design for \u201cThe Three Sisters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Five students were finalists in Tech\/Design\/Management: &#013;<br \/>\n  Casey Miko for Stage Management, Julia Mian &#013;<br \/>\n  and Kayla Iorio for Allied Crafts, Jess Almeida for &#013;<br \/>\n  Hair and Makeup, and Jessica Camarero for \u201cThe &#013;<br \/>\n  Three Sisters\u201d Costume Design.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>WCSU also received a number of Merit Awards.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>For \u201cSweeney Todd,\u201d Vincent McCoy was honored &#013;<br \/>\n  for Outstanding Choreography, Julia Mian for &#013;<br \/>\n  Outstanding Design and Construction of Masks, the &#013;<br \/>\n  Ensemble for Outstanding Musical and Dramatic &#013;<br \/>\n  Support, the Production Team for Outstanding Execution &#013;<br \/>\n  of Design, and the Run Crew for Outstanding &#013;<br \/>\n  Offstage Performance.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Alumna Danielle Fontaine was honored for Outstanding &#013;<br \/>\n  Prop Design for \u201cThe Three Sisters\u201d and &#013;<br \/>\n  the cast of \u201cSeussical, The Musical\u201d was honored for &#013;<br \/>\n  Professional and Quality Student Work. &#013;<br \/>\n  \u201cParticipating in the KCACTF is an incredibly huge &#013;<br \/>\n  undertaking,\u201d Trapani said. \u201cWe appreciate the support &#013;<br \/>\n  and generosity that have allowed us to be one of &#013;<br \/>\n  the finest programs in the region, if not in &#013;<br \/>\n  the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The KCACTF was started in 1969 and features 18,000 &#013;<br \/>\n  students from more than 600 institutions.
