{"id":571,"date":"2019-07-17T18:18:30","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/labancanamedprincipal\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:18:30","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:30","slug":"labancanamedprincipal","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/labancanamedprincipal\/","title":{"rendered":"2014 WCSU graduate selected as principal of Danbury&#8217;s newest school"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0\">DANBURY,   CONN. \u2014 <span style=\"color:black\">Dr.  Frank LaBanca, a graduate of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/\">Western Connecticut State University<\/a><span style=\"color:black\"> doctoral program in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/graduate\/edd\/\">instructional  leadership<\/a><span style=\"color:black\">, will  serve as the principal of Danbury\u2019s The Exploration Academies at Mill Ridge,  which opens next fall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p class=\"style4\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\"><span style=\"color:black\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p class=\"style4\" style=\"margin-top:0\">A longtime educator, LaBanca is the director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skills21.org\/\">Center for 21st Century Skills at  Education Connection<\/a>, commonly known as the \u201cRegional Service Center.\u201d The  center represents Western Connecticut school districts whose mission is  educational change and improvement. LaBanca, from Sandy Hook, has worked with  more than 40 K-12 schools in the state. He will start his new position in  February.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p class=\"style4\">The Exploration Academies, which opens August 2014, will  offer educational programming in the areas of STEM and Global Studies. The  school will accommodate 600 students from Danbury chosen through a lottery  system. The new school is a magnet school because of its theme-based  curriculum, but the curriculum will also follow the standard district academic  criteria.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p class=\"style4\">The STEM Academy will focus on science, technology,  engineering and math. The Global Studies Academy will focus on exploring  critical international themes and issues that are occurring across the world  and that have significant relevance to the lives of today\u2019s students. Mandarin Chinese  will be offered, as well as Spanish, which will be taught at both academies. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"margin-top: 0\"><em>Western Connecticut State University offers outstanding faculty in a range of quality academic programs.
