Now he’s going to run circles around Western Connecticut State University — and the community is invited to join.

At 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, Chatterton will begin running 26 one-mile laps around the university’s Midtown campus at 181 White St. in Danbury. This run will be his 40th marathon over the past 39 months and is part of his ambitious “Taking Strides to ‘Brake’ the Cycle of Poverty.” Any money collected through donations will be turned over to various charities including Catholic Campaign for Human Development, Holy Family Home and Shelter and the City of New Orleans Recreation Department. To date he has collected just under $10,000.

The event is being coordinated by WCSU’s Newman Center, the Social Work Club, and the HPX Club. Tables will be set up around the university gates on White Street and information about poverty and what the community can do to help will be available.

In 2003 Chatterton started cycling around the state and then, 39 months ago, he started running marathons. Each marathon represents 1 million U.S. residents living in poverty. He hopes to run the last marathon — the 41st to represent the million people living in poverty and not yet recognized — of his project in December, but has not yet chosen a location.

“It’s a nice way to get people involved and increase awareness,” Chatterton said. “I’m excited about this. It’s great doing it on a college campus and increasing students’ awareness of issues surrounding poverty. It’s more about awareness than anything.”

For more information, contact the Office of University Relations at (203) 837-8486.

Western Connecticut State University offers outstanding faculty in a range of quality academic programs.
