{"id":653,"date":"2019-07-17T18:18:36","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/mid-atlantic-jazz-orchestra\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:18:36","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:36","slug":"mid-atlantic-jazz-orchestra","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/mid-atlantic-jazz-orchestra\/","title":{"rendered":"2014  WCSU students to perform with region&#8217;s top college jazz musicians"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 Two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\">Western Connecticut State University<\/a> students have been selected to join top college musicians from across the East Coast in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macjo.org\/\">2015 Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra<\/a>, which will debut on <strong>Monday, Jan. 5, 2015,<\/strong> in performance at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jazz.org\/venues\/dizzys-club-coca-cola-510\/?toggle=2\">Dizzy\u2019s Club Coca Cola<\/a> in the Jazz at Lincoln Center venue in Midtown Manhattan. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/music\/music-ed-faqs.asp\">Music education<\/a> majors Molly Sayles, with a concentration in percussion, and Evan Gray, with a concentration in trombone, are among 28 students chosen from elite jazz music programs at colleges and conservatories spanning the Eastern seaboard from Virginia to Massachusetts to form this year\u2019s orchestra. Sayles, of Quaker Hill, is one of two members of the orchestra chosen to perform on the drum set in the rhythm section; Gray, of Southington, will be featured in the orchestra\u2019s solo trombone role.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Performers comprising the orchestra were selected by a committee of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cumberlandjazz.com\/\">Cumberland (Maryland) Jazz Society<\/a>, which sponsors the arts initiative, from a pool of applicants nominated by instructors at their respective music programs. Since its founding in 2009, the orchestra has earned a reputation as an organization dedicated to celebrating and advancing the development of promising collegiate jazz musicians throughout the region.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cThe Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra has established itself as the premier collegiate all-star big band on the East Coast,\u201d the society website for the orchestra observed. \u201cWith past performances in New Orleans, New York and Washington, D.C., the band\u2019s members are among the finest up-and-coming jazz musicians and have represented more than 30 college and university jazz programs over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0\">Jamie Begian, chair of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/music\/\">WCSU Department of Music<\/a> and co-coordinator of jazz studies, has worked extensively with both students throughout their undergraduate education at Western.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will not find two more dedicated, talented and thoughtful students than Molly and Evan,\u201d Begian remarked. \u201cTheir musicianship, attention to detail, and creative thinking are great examples of the type of music students we seek to cultivate at Western.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have sent many musicians to the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra in the past, and I know the bar keeps getting higher for acceptance,\u201d he added. \u201cThe fact that both Molly and Evan are representing our program this year gives me great pride in their work here and confidence in their promising future careers as musicians and music educators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The orchestra\u2019s performance at Dizzy\u2019s Club Coca Cola will feature two sets, beginning at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., conducted by jazz trumpeter, composer and educator <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sean_Jones_(trumpeter)\">Sean Jones<\/a>. Jones has released five albums as bandleader and toured widely with his groups in the United States and abroad, and has performed as lead trumpeter for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. He was featured on Nancy Wilson\u2019s 2007 Grammy Award-winning album \u201cTurned to Blue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Table and bar reservations for the Jan. 5 performance may be made online at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jazz.org\/dizzys\">www.jazz.org\/dizzys<\/a> or by calling (212) 258-9595.
