Western students with valid ID may attend free of charge, with a fee of $10 for non-WCSU students. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Miller has earned international acclaim in jazz music circles as a sideman, bandleader, recording artist and music educator during a career spanning nearly four decades. A native of Greenwood, Miss., Miller studied at Memphis State University with pianists James Williams and Donald Brown. He first earned the attention of jazz critics in the 1970s as a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra under the direction of Duke\u2019s son, trumpeter Mercer Ellington.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMulgrew Miller is one of the greatest jazz pianists in the world today,\u201d remarked jazz saxophonist and bandleader Jimmy Greene, assistant professor of music and assistant coordinator of jazz studies at WCSU.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiller\u2019s credits as a sideman include stints with a who\u2019s who of jazz luminaries, including Art Blakey, Betty Carter, Woody Shaw, Tony Williams and Ron Carter,\u201d Greene observed. \u201cHe is one of the most recorded jazz musicians of his generation, with more than 400 recordings to his credit as a sideman and a bandleader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>      Miller has released a series of recordings on the Landmark, RCA\/Novus and MaxJazz labels over the past three decades as bandleader for Wingspan and other jazz groups. His trio produced four MaxJazz albums released from 2004 to 2007, including \u201cLive at Yoshi\u2019s\u201d Volumes 1 and 2 featuring Derrick Hodge on bass and Karriem Riggins on drums, and \u201cLive at the Kennedy Center\u201d Volumes 1 and 2 featuring Hodge on bass and Rodney Green on drums.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The pianist\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jazz.com\/encyclopedia\/miller-mulgrew\">biography<\/a> in the Encyclopedia of Jazz Musicians observed that \u201cMulgrew Miller performs with truthful invention, harmonic intellectualism and a keen sense of sophistication in his compositions and improvisations. In his work with drummer Art Blakey, bassist Steve Swallow and as a leader, Mulgrew has demonstrated his sharp musical intuition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Recipient in 2006 of an honorary doctorate in performing arts from Lafayette College, Miller is a member of the music faculty and director of jazz studies at William Paterson University in Wayne, N.J.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The concert is sponsored by the WCSU Department of Music.
