After graduating with a music degree in vocal performance, Kupchik has gone on to earn a master’s degree in music and is currently working on an Artist Diploma in vocal performance, both from the University of Miami.

Her experience at Western also prepared Kupchik for the biggest honor of her lifetime: singing for the President of the United States.

In February of this year, Kupchik sang the National Anthem before the President lectured on energy policies at the Florida university.

“Singing at the event was incredible. I couldn’t sleep that night because I was still so excited from that day,” Kupchik said. “Western prepared me for such a memorable moment because I sang the National Anthem so many times. Because of the networking I did as a student, I was able to sing for many organizations and get lots of experience singing.”

A member of both the WCSU Chamber Singers and Concert Choir, Kupchik sang The National Anthem at countless events on- and off-campus. Her performances include singing for the WCSU women’s volleyball team, the Danbury Trashers hockey team, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers hockey team, the Danbury Westerners baseball team and the WCSU men’s hockey club.

Kupchik’s love of music started with voice lessons in the eighth grade. As a high school junior, she decided to make singing a life-long endeavor and started looking at music schools. “I kept asking around what’s a good school for music — and Western kept coming up,” Kupchik said.

As a student at Western, Kupchik placed second in the College II division of the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition and was among seven WCSU music students selected to participate in a cultural exchange with SIAS University in China. Her academic achievements earned her numerous scholarships including awards from The Connecticut Choral Society and the James Sommers Opera, and two from the WCSU Alumni Association.

Now the accomplished soprano is working toward a career as an opera singer and is taking the path of many classical singers by attending a summer vocal program. She then plans to begin auditioning for a Young Artist Program.

“These are highly competitive programs, but it’s the next step to a singing career,” Kupchik said. “Then it’s all about ‘climbing the ladder’ to a career. A long and slow process, but well worth it.”

Western Connecticut State University offers outstanding faculty in a range of quality academic programs.
