This report forms the basis for the consideration of reaffirmation of accreditation for Western by the Association’s Commission on Institutions of Higher Education, which will occur in the spring.

View the report

The association, known as NEASC, has accredited the university continuously since 1957. Its report, completed in November to conclude a two-year review process, said WCSU students are “enthusiastic about their experiences and clearly empowered by their success.”

The team of educators who conducted the accreditation also cited Western’s “high-quality academic programs that continue to improve,” “strong support from external constituents” in the community and state, and expanded and enhanced facilities. It described the university’s administration as “a cohesive, competent group with a strong sense of shared purpose in empowering students to succeed.”

The university’s faculty and staff were also praised.

“The team found their passion for what they do, their commitment to their students and to their community a great strength,” the report stated.

The NEASC team was led by Jean MacCormack, the former chancellor of the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, and included faculty and administrators from universities throughout New England.

“It is clear that the team came to understand and appreciate Western’s values and accomplishments,” said WCSU President James W. Schmotter. “Regional accreditation is granted when an institution shows that it is committed to continuous improvement that results in high-quality, student-centered academic programs. I am very pleased that the university has received this feedback on our work from NEASC.”

NEASC develops and applies standards to member universities and colleges, and assesses the educational effectiveness of those institutions. The organization will conduct a study midway through the 10-year accreditation to ensure the university is making progress on its goals.

For more information, call the Office of University Relations at (203) 837-8486.

Western Connecticut State University offers outstanding faculty in a range of quality academic programs.
