{"id":68,"date":"2019-07-17T18:17:50","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:17:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/2013barnardawards\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:17:50","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:17:50","slug":"2013barnardawards","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/2013barnardawards\/","title":{"rendered":"2013 Two top WCSU students receive Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 Recognized for their academic successes and community service efforts, <strong>Gregory Chamberlin<\/strong>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/biology\/\">biology<\/a> major and math minor from New Milford, and <strong>Thomas Monckton<\/strong>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/asb\/acc\/\">financial accounting<\/a> major from Danbury, were chosen as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\">Western Connecticut State University<\/a>\u2019s 2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csusystemfoundation.org\/barnard.html\">Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award<\/a> recipients.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csusystemfoundation.org\/barnard.html\">Connecticut State University System Foundation<\/a> annually gives 12 students from Western, Central, Eastern and Southern Connecticut State universities the prestigious Barnard Award. To be considered, a student must have at least a 3.75 GPA, a record of significant community service and be nominated by their respective universities. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Chamberlin has a 3.99 GPA and made the Dean\u2019s List each semester. He is a member of the WCSU Honors Program, WCSU Tutoring Resource Center and is president of the WCSU Biology Club. He is also a recipient of the WCSU Merit Scholarship, Sodexo Scholarship and Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>While taking a group senior research course in 2011, Chamberlin studied the diversity of invertebrate communities that live on the backs of loggerhead sea turtles. He is now conducting a series of statistical analyses on the data examined during that class as part of an internship at the Yale Peabody Museum. Last spring, he conducted theoretical work in the field of mathematical biology dealing with cuckoo bird population dynamics which he presented at a Sigma Xi conference at Queens College. He is now conducting research on neural stem cells and intends to present the work at WCSU Research Day. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>He was also a member of the WCSU Habitat for Humanity, and worked with the Waterbury chapter to build a home. He volunteers at the New Milford Hospital Emergency Department and organized a fishing derby for senior citizens over four years. Chamberlin plans to go to medical school and would like to pursue a career as a medical examiner.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Monckton graduated summa cum laude from WCSU as a financial accounting major with a 3.94 GPA in December 2012. He was able to achieve this academic success while juggling his military obligation with the Connecticut Army National Guard and twice serving in Afghanistan.    <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>He was treasurer of WCSU\u2019s Accounting Society, received the Anthony W. Cirone Jr. Accounting Leadership Award for an outstanding academic record and involvement in the community, CSCPA\u2019s Junior Award, and WCSU\u2019s Barbara Winder Awards. Monckton is an Eagle Scout and received the Non Commissioned Officer of the Year 1-102nd Infantry Battalion award, the Army Commendation Medal, Soldier of the Year and Combat Infantryman\u2019s Badge. He also earned the Humanitarian Service Medal for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Monckton now works at International Business Machines Corp. as a transfer pricing analyst in the Global Tax Department and is quartermaster of the Newtown VFW Post 308.
