{"id":712,"date":"2019-07-17T18:18:43","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/nobel-winner-leymah-gbowee\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:18:43","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:43","slug":"nobel-winner-leymah-gbowee","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/nobel-winner-leymah-gbowee\/","title":{"rendered":"WCSU 2017 &#8211; Nobel winner Leymah Gbowee to speak at WCSU"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n           &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 Nobel  Peace Prize winner <a href=\"http:\/\/nobelwomensinitiative.org\/laureate\/leymah-gbowee\/\">Leymah Gbowee<\/a> will lead a public talk at 6:30  p.m. on <strong>Friday, Feb. 24, 2017<\/strong>, in Ives Concert Hall in White Hall on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/\">Western Connecticut  State University<\/a> Midtown campus, 181 White Street in Danbury. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Gbowee will visit WCSU as part of the 2017 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peacejam.org\/\">PeaceJam<\/a> Conference,  in which university students and faculty provide practical learning for more  than 100 high school and middle school students though workshops, focus groups  and projects. PeaceJam\u2019s award-winning programs are designed to nurture character  traits, leadership and civic skills needed to create positive change in the  world. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-16\" src=\"http:\/\/wcsu.edu\/peacejam\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/149\/2016\/12\/gbowee.png\" alt=\"gbowee\" width=\"534\" height=\"179\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The PeaceJam Foundation\u00a0is an international organization  whose mission statement is \u201cto create young leaders committed to positive  change in themselves, their communities, and the world through the inspiration  of Nobel Peace Laureates who pass on the spirit, skills and wisdom they  embody.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>WCSU founded a PeaceJam  chapter with support from Graves Kiely, an international financial adviser who  encourages the project\u2019s potential to confront and solve difficult world issues.  A Connecticut PeaceJam Fest was held on campus in late September for  students to learn how to become a mentor or to join the PeaceJam Scholars Club.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Liberian activist Gbowee led  a women\u2019s peace movement\u00a0that  helped end the\u00a0Second Liberian  Civil War\u00a0in 2003. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/nobel_prizes\/peace\/laureates\/2011\/press.html\">Gbowee, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf,\u00a0and\u00a0Tawakkul  Karman<\/a> were awarded the 2011\u00a0Nobel  Peace Prize\u00a0\u201cfor their\u00a0non-violent\u00a0struggle for the safety of women and  for\u00a0women\u2019s rights\u00a0to full participation in  peace-building work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>PeaceJam is hosted by WCSU\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/compassioncreativity\/\">Center for Compassion, Creativity &amp; Innovation<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/studentlife\/\">The Center for Student Involvement<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/pcaap\/\">Pre-Collegiate &amp; Access Programs<\/a>; and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/honors\/\">Kathwari Honors program<\/a>, led by Professor of  Political Science\u00a0Dr. Chris Kukk. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>For more information, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/peacejam\/\">www.wcsu.edu\/peacejam\/<\/a> or call the Office of University  Relations at (203) 837-8486.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><em>Western Connecticut State  University offers outstanding faculty in a range of quality academic programs.
