{"id":754,"date":"2019-07-17T18:18:47","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/permaculture-garden-community-champions-grant\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:18:47","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:47","slug":"permaculture-garden-community-champions-grant","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/permaculture-garden-community-champions-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"WCSU 2016 &#8211; Permaculture Garden Community Champions Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/\">Western Connecticut State University<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/goodall\/\">Jane Goodall Center for Excellence in Environmental  Studies<\/a> recently was awarded a $500 Community Champions Grant by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.constellation.com\/\">Constellation<\/a>, an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.exeloncorp.com\/\">Exelon company<\/a>, for use with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/goodall\/permculture.asp\">Permaculture Garden  Initiative<\/a> project.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Professor  of Anthropology Dr. Laurie Weinstein, chair of the Jane Goodall Center, said that  when she applied for the competitive award, she explained that the Permaculture  Garden at WCSU feeds a number of people.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn  addition to our own students, the garden helps food pantries in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwwesternct.org\/danburyfoodcollaborative\">Danbury Food  Collaborative<\/a> and families through <a href=\"https:\/\/daract.org\/\">DARA<\/a> (Danbury Area  Refugee Assistance),\u201d Weinstein said.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The  Community Champions Grant will go toward hiring a garden manager in the spring  through summer, as well as toward new equipment, seeds and plants.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe  always have needs,\u201d Weinstein said. \u00a0\u201cI  would love to raise $30,000 for a full-time person to manage the garden and our  outreach programs next year and in years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Upon  hearing the news, Susan Moran, of <a href=\"http:\/\/dailybreadfoodpantry.com\/DailyBreadHistory.html\">Daily Bread Food  Pantry<\/a> in Danbury, said, \u201cAs one of the people who has had the privilege of bringing  the produce of the garden to the community, I can&#8217;t thank [Dr. Weinstein]  enough for the time, commitment and love put forth in the success of the  garden.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe  clients of Daily Bread Food Pantry are grateful for the food and have also  learned about new foods through the program,\u201d Moran added.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>For  those who want a first-hand experience in the garden, The Jane Goodall Center  will host a \u201cCommunity Day\u201d at 9 a.m. on <strong>Tuesday,  Nov. 15, 2016<\/strong>. Activities will include weeding and cleaning up the garden, and  other maintenance and upkeep tasks. Tools and snacks will be provided.
