{"id":755,"date":"2019-07-17T18:18:47","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/permaculture-garden-community-day\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:18:47","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:47","slug":"permaculture-garden-community-day","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/permaculture-garden-community-day\/","title":{"rendered":"2015  WCSU to host Permaculture Garden Community Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 The public is welcomed to help harvest kale, Asian pears, berries and herbs from the garden at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\">Western Connecticut State University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015<\/strong>, between 10 a.m. and noon, members of the community are invited to join faculty, staff and students in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/goodall\/permculture.asp\">Permaculture Garden<\/a> Community Day.\u201d The garden is adjacent to the Science Building on the university\u2019s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>WCSU Professor of Anthropology <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/socialsci\/faculty.asp\">Dr. Laurie Weinstein<\/a> has been the driving force behind the garden, a grassroots effort that serves as an interdisciplinary \u201cclassroom\u201d in addition to forging community ties. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Once the bounty, which also includes onions, arugula, pole beans and corn, is gathered, it will be delivered to a shelter in the region. The garden has also partnered with the Danbury Food Collaborative. Volunteers from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.traderjoes.com\/\">Trader Joe\u2019s<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wholefoodsmarket.com\/sales-flyer\">Whole Foods<\/a>, both markets in Danbury, will be at the event.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Tools and snacks will be provided; gardeners are asked to bring gloves and wear appropriate gardening clothes.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>After the harvesting, volunteers will then be asked to help clean and straighten up the garden to prepare for a garden dedication and visit from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janegoodall.org\/\">Dr. Jane Goodal<\/a>l on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/newsevents\/2015-Jane-Goodall.asp\">Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015<\/a>. Tickets are still available for Goodall\u2019s 2:30 p.m. lecture in Ives Concert Hall in White Hall on the Midtown campus and her book will be available for sale and signing by Goodall. Tickets for the lecture are $15 for the general public, $10 for students with I.D. and seniors, and $5 for children under 12.
