The Honor  Roll recognizes colleges and universities that support exemplary community  service programs and raise the visibility of effective practices in campus  community partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>In the area of General Community Service, the university was  honored for its participation in the Lakes Project and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/newsevents\/event.asp?event_id=21359\">Project Homeless  Connect<\/a>. For the Lakes Project, the university partnered with Candlewood  Lake Authority and, under the direction of Dr. Edwin Wong, professor of  Biological and Environmental Sciences, sampled water from five town beaches to  ensure that the bacteria present are not emitting toxins. Project Homeless  Connect involves the university\u2019s participation in a campus event that brings  together more than 60 area agencies to provide immediate assistance to  individuals who are homeless or in need of housing and social service assistance.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>In the Education category, the university was recognized for  its \u201cElection Connection, Lyme and Other Tick-Borne Disease Prevention Study  and the two-course sequence in the Social Work program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our education programs, we see our students involved in  critical thinking and research while navigating the joys and challenges of  field work with faculty in our education programs,\u201d said Dr. Ann Atkinson, WCSU  associate vice president for academic affairs. \u201cWe also see students, faculty  and staff working to make a difference in our environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>For this award, Dr. Neeta Connally, associate professor of  Biological and Environmental Sciences, was recently granted $1.6 million from  the Centers for Disease Control to fund a tick management study that aims to  bridge the gap between tick control research and human behavior with the goal  of combatting tick-borne illnesses. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Related to the same award, the Social Work program recently  established a two-course sequence that allows students to work with community  groups and organizations to bring about positive social change on a significant  issue.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The Corporation for National and Community Service, a  federal agency, has handed out the award since 2006 in collaboration with the  U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. &#013;<br \/>\n      Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as the  American Council on Education, Campus Compact and the Interfaith Youth Core.  The Honor Roll recognizes institutions in four categories: general community  service, interfaith community service, economic opportunity and education.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><em>Western Connecticut  State University offers outstanding faculty in a range of quality academic  programs.
