{"id":816,"date":"2019-07-17T18:18:52","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/rogersparkstudents\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:18:52","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:18:52","slug":"rogersparkstudents","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/rogersparkstudents\/","title":{"rendered":"WestConn opens its doors to local middle school students"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014  For one day in February, a group of local middle school students will get a chance to see what it\u2019s like to be on a college campus.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0\">Some 100 students from Rogers Park Middle School will visit Western Connecticut State University on Friday, Feb. 20, to participate in math and science activities as part of the school\u2019s Exploration Academy, which exposes the students to science, technology, engineering and math.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0\">This event will bring together students from the middle school and from WestConn for hands-on learning in a collegiate environment.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Since last fall, WestConn\u2019s math department has been working with a group of students at Rogers Park and the city\u2019s Broadview Middle School to help them achieve their math goals. Now the program is taking the next step forward by helping the younger students in science.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The middle school visitors will break into groups of three and four students to participate in academic activities. Then the students will be given a tour of the Midtown campus and have a bag lunch before returning to their school.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>As part of their visit, the children will tour the university\u2019s state-of-the-art Science Building and look into the teaching and biology research labs. \u201cI will have a display of live invertebrate animals, spineless wonders, for the students to see up close,\u201d said Dr. Mitch Wagener, associate professor of biological and environmental sciences. \u201cWe will also have a chance to discuss some of the creepy and dangerous creatures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>For more information, contact the Office of University Relations at (203) 837-3278.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>Western Connecticut State University offers outstanding faculty in a range of quality academic programs.
