Based on the work of German dramatist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatredatabase.com\/20th_century\/frank_wedekind_001.html\">Frank Wedekind<\/a> with book and lyrics by <a href=\"http:\/\/ensemblestudiotheatre.org\/steven-sater\">Steven Sater<\/a> and music by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.duncansheik.com\/\">Duncan Sheik<\/a>, \u201cSpring Awakening\u201d depicts 19th-century German teenagers in their journey to self-discovery and \u201cawakening.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Since its 2006 Broadway premiere at the Eugene O\u2019Neill Theatre, \u201cSpring Awakening\u201d has won eight <a href=\"http:\/\/theater.nytimes.com\/2007\/06\/11\/theater\/theaterspecial\/11tony.html?_r=0\">Tony Awards<\/a>, including Best Musical, Direction, Book, Score and Featured Actor. The production also garnered four <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbill.com\/news\/article\/108201-Utopia-and-Spring-Awakening-Win-Top-Honors-at-Drama-Desk-Awards\">Drama Desk Awards<\/a> and the original cast album received a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbill.com\/news\/article\/114950-Spring-Awakening-Wins-2008-Best-Musical-Show-Album-Grammy-Krieger-and-Dale-Also-Win\">Grammy Award<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpring Awakening\u201d will open the last weekend of February and run through mid-March. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 27 (gala following) and 28 (high school night); at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, March 1, 2, 8, 9, 15 and 16. There will also be matinee shows at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 and 16, and Sunday, March 10. Performances will be in the Berkshire Theatre on the WCSU Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The public is invited. Tickets will be $25 for general admission and $15 for seniors and non-WCSU students with I.D. WCSU students with a valid I.D will be admitted free. Due to its controversial subject matter, this play is not recommended for children.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Director Sal Trapani, chairman of the WCSU Department of Theatre Arts, said the play explores the emotional inner lives of the characters. His approach to directing this production has been to \u201clet the issues in the play speak for themselves.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Trapani promised that fans of the musical will be surprised by the way he and musical director Tom Cuffari have found a way to significantly enhance the sound in the Grammy Award-winning score.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The cast includes Vincent McCoy, of Torrington, as Melchior; Austin Carnes, of Southbury, as Moritz; Josh Hahn, of Derby, as Hanschen; Mick Gloss, of Stratford, as Otto; Tyler Caisse, of Wolcott, as Ernst; Anthony Paparello, of Bristol, as Georg; Anthony Mendoza, of Brewster, N.Y., as Adult Man; Anna Giordano, of Clinton, as Wendla; Katie Rudnicki, of South Meriden, and Audrey Twitchell, of Westport, as Ilse; Alexis Willoughby, of Gaylordsville, and Corinne Marshall, of Prospect, as Marta; Michelle O\u2019Konis, of Stafford, as Thea; Theresa Curran, of Shelton, and Anna Morse, of Cheshire, as Anna; and Casey Perruzzi, of Stratford, as Adult Woman.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The crew will include Sal Trapani as director, Pam McDaniel and Sal Trapani as producers, Frank Herbert as technical director, Tom Cuffari as musical director, Elizabeth Popiel as set designer, Scott Cally as lighting designer, Lisa Renee Jordan as costume designer, Jen Tury-Draghi as choreographer, Casey Miko as stage manager, and Matthew Terzigni as production manager. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>For tickets or more information, call the Box Office at (203) 837-TIXX or go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/tickets\/\">www.wcsu.edu\/tickets<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>Western Connecticut State University offers outstanding faculty in a range of quality academic programs.
