Melissa Borrero, of New Milford, and Adriana Guaman, of Danbury, students in the WCSU Department of Marketing, served as interns at Ives Concert Park on the university’s Westside campus. Each received $500 in October 2015 from an intern program created and funded by Nancy Stein, former Friends of the Ives board member.

Established in 1975, and named after the famous composer and Danbury resident Charles Ives, Ives Concert Park is a spacious outdoor venue located on 40 acres of land on the WCSU Westside campus. The Ives has hosted a variety of live entertainers, from world-renowned musicians and recording artists to theatre performances and cultural events.

Borrero and Guaman worked as marketing interns at Ives from May to December 2015. Phyllis Cortese, executive director of the Charles Ives Authority for the Performing Arts, the nonprofit organization that governs Ives Concert Park, congratulated them on their work, calling them “two very special young ladies” and “a tremendous addition to our marketing team at Ives.”

Dr. Anthony Ciarleglio, director of the cooperative education internship program at WCSU, added, “Melissa and Adriana’s internship demonstrates the value of outside-the-classroom experience as both a beneficial exposure to the ‘real-world’ for students and as an asset to organizations such as Ives.”

In a personal essay about her experience at Ives, Borrero wrote, “I learned how to better interact with people and important methods of advertising such as how to create e-blasts, online marketing and more. Most important, I learned the kind of marketing that I would like to focus on in my future career: event marketing. Working at Ives made me grow a passion for this specific field.”

In her essay, Guaman stated, “My experience at Ives has been … inspiring because I learned from two great workers day in and out, and I was able to observe how much they care for the organization and the time they take to get things done. I was able to quickly learn different platforms and software, and give this organization the best I could offer.”

For more information, send an email to pcortese@ivesconcertpark.com.

Western Connecticut State University offers outstanding faculty in a range of quality academic programs.
