{"id":94,"date":"2019-07-17T18:17:51","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:17:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/2014tri-stateweatherconference\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:17:51","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:17:51","slug":"2014tri-stateweatherconference","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/2014tri-stateweatherconference\/","title":{"rendered":"2014  WCSU to host Tri-State Weather Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 Meteorology experts in the public and private sectors, academia and broadcasting will share their professional insights into significant weather phenomena shaping the climate regionally, nationally and globally at the Fifth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/weatherconference\/\">Tri-State Weather Conference<\/a> on <strong>Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014<\/strong>, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\">Western Connecticut State University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The conference, organized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/physics\/meteorology.asp\">meteorology program<\/a> in Western\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/physics\/\">Department of Physics, Astronomy and Meteorology<\/a>, will feature presentations by weather analysts, climate researchers, TV weathercasters and storm trackers on a wide range of topics ranging from recent major weather events to developments in forecasting technology. Co-sponsors for the event include the WCSU student chapter and the New York City\/Long Island chapter of the American Meteorological Society (AMS), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)\/National Weather Service (NWS) forecast offices in Upton, New York, and Taunton, Massachusetts. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The program will run from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 125 of the Science Building on the university\u2019s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Check-in for conference registrants will begin at 8 a.m. in the Science Building Atrium. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Conference registrations are open to the public and may be submitted online at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/weatherconference\">www.wcsu.edu\/weatherconference<\/a>.  The registration fee is $30 per person, and includes a continental breakfast, lunch and refreshments during breaks. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/weather\/lessorg.asp\">Gary Lessor<\/a>, assistant to the director of meteorological studies and the Weather Center at WCSU, observed that the purpose of the conference is to bring together meteorologists, researchers, educators, students, emergency management officials and weather enthusiasts to exchange information and ideas about important topics in the field.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Kocin\">Paul Kocin<\/a>, currently meteorologist for the NOAA\/NWS forecast operations branch and previously a winter weather forecast specialist for The Weather Channel, will discuss \u201cThe Blizzard of 2013: Aberration or the New Normal?\u201d Kocin is the author of \u201cNortheast Snowstorms\u201d released by the AMS. He has earned wide recognition as an expert on Nor\u2019easter storms in the United States, developing with Louis Uccellini a new index called the Northeast Snowfall Impact Scale to measure and compare the severity of winter storms in the region.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Meteorologist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcconnecticut.com\/on-air\/about-us\/Ryan_Hanrahan.html\">Ryan Hanrahan<\/a> of NBC Connecticut TV in West Hartford will offer insights into the technology of forecasting tornadoes in his talk, \u201cDoppler Radar Signatures Associated with Connecticut Tornadoes, 1995 to the Present.\u201d Hanrahan, who earned his master\u2019s degree in atmospheric science at the State University of New York at Albany, joined NBC Connecticut in 2005 and shares his personal and technical insights into weather forecasting and storm development on his blog, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/ryanhanrahan.com\/\">Way Too Much Weather<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Other seminar topics and presenters scheduled during the conference include:<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0\">\u2022\t\u201cExploring Tri-State Climate Variability and Change,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/climate.rutgers.edu\/stateclim_v1\/docs\/ShortCV_Jan14.pdf\">Dr. David Robinson<\/a>, New Jersey state climatologist at Rutgers University.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&#013;<br \/>\n      \u2022\t\u201cHurricane Sandy: Boundary Layer Structure Effects on Winds and Storm Surge,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/jeffrey-tongue\/22\/a09\/478\">Jeffrey Tongue<\/a>, science and operations officer, NOAA\/NWS Upton forecast office.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&#013;<br \/>\n      \u2022\t\u201cNWS Weather Ready Nation Initiative,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nws.noaa.gov\/com\/presentations\/tuell.htm\">Dr. Jason Tuell<\/a>, director, NOAA\/NWS Eastern Region office, Bohemia, New York.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&#013;<br \/>\n      \u2022\t\u201cOperational Applications of GIS: Development of a Flash Flood Potential Index for the Tri-State Area,\u201d Adrienne Leptich, forecaster, NOAA\/NWS Upton forecast office.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&#013;<br \/>\n      \u2022\t\u201cThe GOES-R Satellite: A New Eye in the Sky,\u201d Eleanor Vallier-Talbot, meteorologist, NOAA\/NWS Taunton forecast office.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&#013;<br \/>\n      \u2022\t\u201cViolent Tornado Outbreak, Nebraska and South Dakota: June 16-18, 2014,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quincyvagell.com\/\">Quincy Vagell<\/a>, of Naugatuck, free-lance meteorologist and WCSU alumnus.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&#013;<br \/>\n      \u2022\t\u201cTracking Hurricanes and Saharan Dust Storms from Space,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aoml.noaa.gov\/hrd\/people\/jasonpdunion\/\">Jason Dunion<\/a>, meteorologist, Hurricane Research Division, NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, Miami, Florida.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0\">&#013;<br \/>\n      \u2022\t\u201cWinter 2014-15: Will Our Longstanding Ideas Win Out?\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weatherbell.com\/team-bio\/\">Joe Bastardi<\/a>, chief forecaster, Weatherbell Analytics LLC, New York, New York.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>For more information, contact the Office of University Relations at (203) 837-8486. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>Western Connecticut State University  offers outstanding faculty in a range of quality academic programs.
