WCSU earns CRLA certification

DANBURY, Connecticut — Western Connecticut State University’s Ancell Commons and Tutoring Resource Center have been awarded International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) through the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA).  The CRLA is a leading professional organization and certifying body in the field of tutoring and learning assistance in higher education.

Certification promotes program credibility for the institution and increases faculty and student confidence in the quality of service by setting standards for a consistent and rigorous tutor training program aligned with internationally recognized best practices, providing avenues for ongoing assessment of tutoring skills, and recognizing the contributions of tutors and empowering their leadership development.

WCSU student Anna Bishop, a Brookfield resident pursuing a B.A. in Psychology, serves as an Ancell Commons tutor.

“Having the CRLA certification is so exciting because it solidifies all of the hard work we’ve put into our tutoring programs here at WCSU,” Bishop said. “Being recognized for our standards, skills and credibility as tutors is truly an honor and reinforces the dedication we’ve put into our training and program. I feel so lucky to be a part of this amazing team and to have received this wonderful recognition!”

Working toward the certification has been a powerful, long-term collaboration between both centers. Tutors receive 12 hours of training in communication techniques, goal setting, ethics and academic integrity, learning strategies and theory, and techniques for promoting independent learning. Peer tutors will have the opportunity to earn a valuable credential that showcases their expertise as tutors.

Peer tutoring is offered free of charge to all WCSU students. To learn more about tutoring services available at WCSU, visit www.wcsu.edu/academic-support/.
