Two second-half goals lift Eastern men over Western, 2-0

BOX SCORE

DANBURY, CT (Sep. 29) —  Senior Matt Furman (Montville, CT) broke a scoreless tie in the game’s 73rd minute to help the Eastern Connecticut State University men’s soccer team remain unbeaten and defeat in-state and Little East Conference rival Western Connecticut State University 2-0 Saturday evening at Western’s Westside Athletic Complex.

The Western offense generated the game’s first shot in the second minute of play, but for the remainder of the half Eastern dominated the offensive opportunities, holding a 12-4 advantage in shots taken during the opening period.  At the 26:43 mark, Eastern’s Mitch Power (Douglas, MA) drove around the left side of the Western defense and blasted a shot that caromed off the left post and across the face of the goal, missing the right post by inches.  After 45 minutes of play, the score remained tied at 0-0.

In the second half, Eastern picked up where it left off and continued attacking the Western defense.  After 73 minutes of scoreless play, Eastern’s Mike Radlbeck (Westbrook, CT) brought the ball into the Western end of the field and chipped a pass over the top of the Colonial defenders.  Furman just outraced a Western defender to the ball and drilled it into the back of the net with a perfectly timed strike, giving Eastern a 1-0 lead.  Seven minutes later, Power delivered a pass to senior Cory Tobler (Portland, CT) who gave the Warriors an insurance goal and a 2-0 final margin of victory.

For the game, Eastern held a 20-8 advantage in shots, and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.  Western keeper Jack Holub (Sherman, CT) finished with eight saves in a losing effort, while senior Jordan Munsell (Waterford, CT) made three saves to collect the win for Eastern.

With the loss, Western’s season record now stands at 1-6-2 and 1-2 in the Little East Conference, while Eastern remains unbeaten at 9-0, 3-0 in the LEC.  The Colonials return to action on Wednesday, October 3rd, when they travel to play Albertus Magnus College.  Game time is slated for 4:00pm.
