Albertus Magnus edges Western men, 1-0

NEW HAVEN, CT (Sep. 28) —  Stephen Zapata (Hamden, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 58th minute as the Albertus Magnus men’s soccer team edged Western Connecticut State 1-0 in non-conference action on Wednesday. With the win, the Falcons move to 9-1-2 on the season as they remain unbeaten in their last nine contests.

Zapata’s team-high seventh goal of the year puts him now at 21 points as he has also registered a team-best seven assists.

Donato Piroscafo (Naugatuck, Conn.) earned the shutout, the Falcons’ seventh of the season, as he recorded four saves in net for Albertus. West Conn’s Jack Holub (Sherman, CT) made 11 stops for the Colonials (1-7-2) but allowed one goal which proved to be the game-winner.

Albertus controlled the tempo throughout the contest as they outshot the Colonials 23-9 on the afternoon, including a commanding 12-3 clip in the first half. The Falcons also held a 9-1 advantage on corner kicks with six in the first frame.
