Freshman midfielder Camilo Estrada (Pawtucket, RI) registered what proved to be the game-winning goal in the fifth minute to lead the Rhode Island College men’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Western Connecticut State University at the RIC Soccer Field in Little East Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Rhode Island College (3-7-1, 2-2 LEC) snaps a three-game losing streak and moves into a tie for fourth place in the Little East Conference standings. Meanwhile, Western Connecticut (1-8-2, 1-3 LEC), which has dropped four of its last five contests, has now been held scoreless since Sept. 15.
In the opening minutes of action, sophomore forward Emmanuel Asiedu (Lincoln, RI) sparked the offensive attack with a breakaway right down the center of the field. However, as he approached the box, a Western defender tripped Asiedu, which set up a free kick from 25 yards out. Estrada stepped in and blasted a shot that deflected off the defensive wall and past Colonials goalkeeper Jack Holub (Sherman, CT) to give the Anchormen the, 1-0, lead.
Rhode Island College continued to pepper Holub with shots throughout the first half, but failed to convert on any of its opportunities. In total, the Anchormen outshot the Colonials, 9-1, in the first frame.
The second half proved to be a different story for both squads after RIC sophomore forward Austin Dias (Lincoln, RI) picked up a pair of yellow cards in the 48th and 52nd minutes, respectively, leading to a red card for Dias and forcing the Anchormen to play a man down for the remainder of the game.
As a result, the Colonials picked up the offensive intensity, which resulted in several scoring chances. Yet, the hosts stood their ground defensively and Rhode Island College goalkeeper Christopher Duarte (Cumberland, RI) made two key saves to keep the Colonials off the scoreboard.
On the other end, the Anchormen had a handful of chances to increase their lead despite being a man down, but couldn’t find the back of the net. The Colonials were aided in the 55th minute by a fantastic team save from junior defender Jeremy Blair (Kingston, Jamaica) on a point blank shot from Asiedu, who slipped past Holub and had a wide open look.
Led by senior defender Tucker Shepard (Tiverton, RI), sophomore defender Jeff Sampaio (West Warwick, RI) and the rest of the RIC backfield, the Anchormen maintained their solid defense and kept the Colonials from tying the game, en route to their first home victory of the season. Duarte (3-7-1) recorded his third shutout of the season, making a pair of saves along the way.
Holub (1-7-2) made four saves in the loss.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Western New England on Wednesday, Oct. 10 (3:30 p.m.).
