\"Hancock<\/a>Hancock Student Leadership Program<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The Hancock Student Leadership Program promotes, fosters, and identifies student leaders and develops their ability to inspire, motivate, and influence others after graduation. The program promotes students\u2019 development of a body of practical ethics, good communication skills, compassion and empathy, team and community building, creative problem-solving, goal setting, conflict resolution, independent thinking, and the financial awareness required for sound financial stewardship for the management of budgets.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"LCCC<\/a>The Leadership, Compassion and Creativity Certificate program is a leadership program that provides an opportunity for students to receive a certificate by exploring the values of leadership, compassion & creativity across all Student Affairs disciplines and with people of all communities. This program takes a student’s co-curricular activities, leadership roles and community service hours and combines them into one leadership certificate.<\/span>

At the end of completing the LCCC, students are able to explain how they have become more compassionate and creative leaders; and explain how participation in LCCC has shaped their understanding of leadership.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\"Liana<\/span><\/strong>Recipient: <\/span>Liana Rodriguez<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

“<\/span>Liana is a sophomore who is offering an incredible amount of talent and dedication to the students of WCSU. Specifically she is the WCSU manager for the Professional Clothes Closet (PCC)! She volunteered last year as a freshman and has made the dream of a clothing closet for our students reality. She is in charge of several other students, operations, marketing, and manages all the donations coming into the closet! She is a Career Peer Leader who has shown dedication and passion in her mentorship of dozens (and dozens!) of students. Liana is the Community Service Director of the NSLS and her outreach to this organization to get them involved with projects has been commendable. She is a notetaker for the university AND holds down another part time job AND keeps a 3.72 GPA!“<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

“<\/span>Charlie has done an exem<\/span><\/em>plary job of involving himself in WCSU\u2019s campus community. A proud Executive Board member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, he has a stellar \"Charles<\/a><\/span>understanding of what it takes to meaningfully connect with others. He has provided incredible support through his participation within the Center for Student Involvement, and most recently joined the Department of Housing & Residence Life as a Resident Assistant, where he has shown great promise as a student leader. As a first year student, it is Charlie\u2019s kindness, dedication, and quick learning that make him a wonderful example to his peers and a fantastic emerging leader within our campuses. He is caring, compassionate, and steps up to the plate whenever needed. He is always willing to help out in any way. He is being asked to run for more leadership positions in student life. Resident of the Year<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

This award is given to a member of the residential student body who has served the campus community above and beyond the call of duty. This individual is an outstanding leader and motivator to all students, but particularly the residential students.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recipient: Allison Black<\/strong><\/span> from Centennial Hall<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n

“Allison has displayed a fantastic commitment to WCSU through her involvement in the Department of Housing & Residence Life. A stellar employee in Centennial Hall, she has earned the respect of several staff members and Resident Directors. This respect, in addition to her professional performance, has earned her a spot as a Resident Assistant for the next academic year. Her work ethic and personality make her a noteworthy member of the residential community. It is for these reasons that the Inter-Residence Hall Association is honored to present this year\u2019s Resident of the Year Award to Allison Black.”<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Housing and Residence Life Staff Member of the Year – RA<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

This award is given to a Resident Assistant who has shown extreme dedication to Housing throughout the academic year. Through programming, office work, and showing support for the residents of Western Connecticut State University, the award recipient is being honored for his\/her service.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recipient:<\/span> Wanjiru Gatheru <\/span><\/span><\/strong>from Pinney Hall – RA of the Year<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n

“Wanj has gone above and beyond this past year in the RA role.\u00a0 As a returning RA she assisted in helping the new staff understand the position and was there to help them out in any way she could. Wanj is always willing to help out the staff, and residents when she can. Many of her staff relied on her for her experience and guidance this year. Wanj\u2019s outgoing personality allows residents to feel comfortable going to her.”<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

This award is given to an Academic Resource Mentor who has shown extreme dedication to Housing throughout the academic year. Through programming, office work, and showing support for the residents of Western Connecticut State University, the award recipient is being honored for his\/her service.<\/span><\/p>\n

“<\/span>Lizzie has gone above and beyond her role as an ARM, helping first years transition through their first year of college by connecting them not only to academic resources but supportive resources such as accessibilities and counseling.“<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\"Litchfield<\/a>Program of the Year\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

This award is given either to a Hall Council, Resident Assistant, Academic Resource Mentor, or a member of the residential student body who has hosted a program that has best suited the university and the needs of the community.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Engaging residents from both campuses and multiple halls, this program was a highlight within the Department of Housing & Residence Life during the Fall 2021 semester. Staff members turned the first floor of Litchfield Hall into a new space, giving residents the opportunity to enjoy good food, good music, and most importantly, time together. The collaborative efforts that were put into this program speak to the capabilities and dedication of the hosting staff members. It is for these reasons that the Inter-Residence Hall Association is honored to present this year\u2019s Program of the Year Award to Resident Assistants Shivam Soni and Peter Bigica for their program entitled \u201cSilent Disco.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\"Centennial<\/a>Hall Council of the Year\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

This award is given to a Hall Council that has facilitated successful programming, has made an impact on their resident hall, and has ultimately coincided with the Department of Housing and Residence Life\u2019s C.U.L.T.U.R.E. program. The award is voted upon by the Inter-Residence Hall Association, which represents the residential student body.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Centennial Hall Council has gone above and beyond to offer programming for its residents while upholding the C.U.L.T.U.R.E Housing model. Programming they\u2019ve done has made such a positive impact on the residents of Centennial Hall.”<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

“Whose Got Game\u201d is the winner for this year\u2019s Program of the year award from the Program Activates Council. We here at PAC felt that \u201cWhose Got Game\u201d had an outstanding turnout each and every week with a very strong sense of community. This program was tailored to all students allowing them to find a place to hang out and enjoy themselves. Along with that, this program gave the ability for different clubs to host or cosponsor each week.”<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

“Savannah has consistently stepped up as a kind and supportive sister. She has taken on multiple leadership roles in her organization and is consistently showing up to support other organizations and spread Greek Unity. Savannah also represented WCSU at the Northeastern Greek Leadership Conference and came back with many amazing ideas and information to present to the community. We cannot wait to see what she does next!”<\/em>

“As soon as he joined TKE, it was extremely obvious that he was an extremely hard worker. He works at CSI, is an RA on campus, recently elected to the FSL executive board, and treasurer for TKE after not even a semester into joining. Usually this is unheard of, but he continually puts in the hard work, doesn’t stop, and hasn’t taken an off day. He is a friendly face in FSL and is constantly supporting all orgs. We cannot wait to see what he does next!”<\/em>

Outstanding Greek Member of the Year<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

“Ihairy has gone above and beyond to continually show what it truly means to be a sorority woman. She has excelled as an organization Vice President, as the VP of Administration for the FSL Council and we know she will exceed our expectations as the newly elected Fraternity and Sorority Life Council President. Ihairy is an individual that others know they can go to and has constantly been the person to pick up other duties that may have fallen through the cracks. We want to thank Ihairy for all of her hard work and we cannot wait to see what the FSL council accomplishes with her lead.”<\/em>

This award goes to the organization that has made a significant contribution to the Greek Council, the university, and the greater community.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recipient: Tau Kappa Epsilon<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

“Tau Kappa Epsilon has grown incredibly against all odds in the new age of COVID. WCSU’s Chapter of TKE is currently ranked 18 out of over 200 chapters nationally, ranked number 2 in the province!\u00a0 The chapter is full of many new and passionate brothers who are looking to make “Better Men for a Better World” . This year at their annual TKE Jump-A-Thon , the first since COVID hit, they were able to raise over $1,800 to St. Judes. The fraternity has been incredibly supportive of other organizations and has many focused efforts on FSL unity. We are very excited to see what TKE does next!”<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\"MattCustomer Service Award<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

The Customer Service Award goes to an employee who has demonstrated excellent customer service to all students and WestConn community, has excellent communication skills interacting with many individuals on an everyday basis, and has patience dealing with difficult customers and has strong problem-solving skills when it comes to resolving any issue.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recipient: Matthew Forti<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cThis ECM employee has displayed extreme dedication to not only the ECM department, but also the university as a whole. They are not only an ECM manager, but they also volunteer their time to other clubs and departments, and they are a captain of the football team. Throughout his 2 years with ECM, he has taken on a lot of responsibility and portrayed the epitome of what we call a leader!”<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Long Journey Award<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

The Long Journey Award goes to an employee who has worked for ECM for 3 consecutive years\/6 consecutive semesters, been vital to the success of the department by working in all areas: Centers\/ONC\/Ives\/Midtown, constantly is on time and reliable for multiple shifts, has gone above and beyond what is asked of them, and is a leader and a mentor to other students in the department.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recipient: Julian Soares<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cSince joining ECM 3 years ago, as a student employee, he has worked his way up to the current position of Student Manager for the Westside Campus. He has done every job: from working COVID testing, to managing athletic games, to room setups and breakdowns, to box truck runs, organizing storage rooms and picking up and putting down the basketball floor in this very arena. All while leading other students and teaching them the job. He is a leader, and a fantastic and positive example to his coworkers.”<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The ECM All-Star Award goes to an employee who is available for any task needed, takes on responsibility and initiatives on learning new skills, shows excellent leadership to all students of our department, is a versatile worker able to apply themselves in many different manners, and displayed a large variety of skills such as customer service, punctuality, dependency, enthusiasm, and a great work ethic.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recipient: Omar Castellanos<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

“This individual was hired in august of last year for event services doing these wonderful setups such as this one and within a matter of weeks we were able to see his ability. He took every challenge with stride and rose to occasion.”<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Macricostas School of Arts and Sciences \u2013 Outstanding Faculty Member<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

This award is given to a faculty member from the Macricostas School of Arts & Sciences for outstanding contribution to WCSU students.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Dr.<\/strong>Recipient: <\/span>Dr. Zuohong Pan<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

“Dr. Zuohong Pan earned a Ph.D. from Wayne State University. He teaches macroeconomics, microeconomics, money & banking, mathematical economics, economic development, applied econometrics, contemporary domestic economic issues, social research issues and social research seminars. His research interests include international trade and finance, financial modeling & forecasting, economic development and urban economics. He has co-authored\/edited a number of books, including Investment Banking in the United States and Taiwan in the 21st Century. Pan has published numerous papers in periodicals such as Urban Studies, China Economic Review, the Journal of Computational Intelligence in Finance and Computational Economics. He also reviews for professional journals, such as Urban Studies and China Economic Review.”<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

School of Visual & Performing Arts \u2013 Outstanding Faculty Member\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

This award is given to a faculty member from the School of Visual & Performing Arts for outstanding contribution to WCSU students.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"John<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

Recipient: John Hickok<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

“John Hickok directed the acclaimed world premiere of DMW Greer\u2019s BURNING BLUE at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on London\u2019s West End (2 Olivier nominations), as well productions in LA, San Francisco, and NYC. He\u2019s directed straight plays, musicals & classics all over the country, most notably the off-B\u2019way premiere of EYE OF THE BEHOLDER starring Kim Hunter, and BUS STOP (\u201c10 Best Plays of 1980\u201d Boston Phoenix). He was a member of the WRITERS THEATRE in NYC working on new play development, the director\u2019s group at The Director\u2019s Company, a curator at The New York Theatre Workshop, participated in the Hal Prince Musical Theatre Workshop as a director for three years, as well as dramaturging\/directing numerous new plays and musical readings. As an actor, John goes back and forth between Shakespeare and musicals. On Broadway, he created the roles of Governor Slaton in PARADE, Zoser in Elton John\u2019s AIDA, and Professor Bhaer in LITTLE WOMEN, and can be heard on all three cast albums. Also on B\u2019way: MAN & BOY (opposite Frank Langella), OUR COUNTRY\u2019S GOOD, and Rupert Holmes\u2019 ACCOMPLICE. As an educator, he taught Shakespeare and acting for three years at Bard College and directed HOT L BALTIMORE. At Central Connecticut State University he directed RENT, URINETOWN, and SPRING AWAKENING. At WCSU, where\u2019s he\u2019s currently teaching acting, he\u2019s directed YOU CAN\u2019T TAKE IT WITH YOU, ANNE OF GREEN GABLES, and A CHRISTMAS CAROL. “Professor Doreen Graham is a full- time Assistant Professor in Nursing at Western Connecticut State University. Doreen has been a full- time professor this past five years and is in the process of finishing her Doctorate dissertation in Nursing Education at Western Connecticut State University. Doreen is also a part-time per diem Nurse Practitioner at Waterbury Hospital in the Cardiovascular Critical Care Unit. Doreen\u2019s background in both nursing and advance practice nursing has been for over thirty years in critical care. Doreen is board certified in critical care and is a member of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the American College of Cardiology. Professor Doreen Graham is also a member of both the Mu Beta and Kappa Alpha Chapters of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Recipient: Thomas Miller<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

“Professor Miller, a very proud alumnus, graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Justice and Law Administration from WestConn. He then went on to earn a Juris Doctor from the Regent University School of Law, where he graduated cum laude. While in law school, he served as the Business Editor of the Regent University Law Review and clerked for the Judiciary Committee of the United States Senate.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Professor Miller is licensed to practice law in state and federal courts in Connecticut. He owns and operates a solo, general legal practice where he has advised clients regarding a wide array of legal matters including real estate transactions, small business formation and operation, estate planning, domestic matters, criminal matters, and civil litigation matters.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

In 2018, Professor Miller co-authored, with JLA Professor Terrence Dwyer, the textbook Business Law: Foundations for the 21st Century. He has taught a wide range of classes at WestConn, including Commercial Law; Writing for Justice Professions; Legal Writing, Research, and Analysis; Criminal Law; and Constitutional Law. He also advises the WCSU Moot Court Club.”<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

“Bella is an aspiring professional in the Communications field, graduating as a full-time Kathwari Honors student at WCSU in just 3 years. She served as a Teaching Assistant for two sections of the Nature of Inquiry- guiding first years to transition into the university experience with a greater sense of confidence in themselves. Bella exemplifies Compassion-in-Action; whether serving as a Peer Mentor for freshmen, being involved in the Honors Students of Compassion Club, working at the Career Success Center, as an Honors Assistant overseeing all our social media, as the President of the Play it By Ear A Capella, or the Editor-in Chief of the Perspective Magazine- Bella works tirelessly to help those around her inspiring others to actively in engage in a growth mindset to realize their ideas.”<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

“This award is presented to the club, organization or student that shows exemplary effort to volunteer and serve the community around them.\u00a0 One of the outstanding things about our students and our clubs, organizations and intercollegiate athletic teams is the extent to which community service is an integral part of their lives.\u00a0 During this academic year as we were emerging from the pandemic, many students, clubs, organizations and intercollegiate athletic teams found a way to engage and volunteer in community service activities in Danbury and the greater Danbury area.\u00a0 That said, there was one organization that stood out in terms of both the number and the variety of program done.\u00a0 \u00a0These include making cat blankets to donate to Noah\u2019s Ark Animal Shelter, putting together care packages to donate to The Center for Empowerment and Education, constructing Holiday Toy Packages to donate locally, creating Valentine\u2019s Day Cards to be donated to the Connecticut Children\u2019s Pediatric Care at Danbury Hospital, making PB&J sandwiches and care packages for The Center for Empowerment and Education, baking cookies at the Newman Center to give to WCSU staff and stuffing Easter Eggs with candy and other goodies for their 2nd<\/sup> Annual Easter Egg Hunt with Find Us Outside.”<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

“Micayla was a transfer into WestConn her sophomore year. She made the cheerleading team right when she transferred and got involved in anything she could on campus. Through the cheer team she participated in WCSU Day of Service, color run, cardboard canoe race, accepted students day, clubs carnival , opening ceremonies, homecoming events. She is a HPX allied health major and joined the HPX club. She is a participant in the National Society of Leadership and Success. She works on campus in the AccessAbilities office. and was an orientation leader. She has been captain of the cheerleading team for the past 2 years. She has made Dean\u2019s List 4 times. She will be graduating with Cum Laude. She has an amazing personality. She is hardworking, caring and competitive! She has always maintained an off campus jobs as well. She is a success story as a transfer and she has experienced both commuting and being a resident. She took full advantage of all the campus had to offer. “<\/span>Carly is a senior Biology Major graduating Magna Cum Laude and has been on the Dean\u2019s list four times. She has been working in CSI for more than three years, most recently as the office assistant. She became the voice of CSI to all clubs and organizations\u2026you may know her from all the emails you have received over the course of this year from CSI.<\/span> She joined SGA as a Senator and this past year has been serving as the Community Inclusion Officer where she planned successful events such as Fall and Winter Clubs Carnival, Homecoming, and the upcoming Inaugural Ball.\u00a0 In this role, she also helped new clubs form on campus and chaired the Executive Council.\u00a0 She is a big part of SGA\u2019s success this year!\u00a0 She is also here tonight as one of our MCs.”<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

In her leadership roles, she has been described as a student that answered the call to the many opportunities that arose, worked well under pressure, and was very dependable.”\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

He was the co-chair of the university-wide Mascot Committee, and senator in the Student Government Association before being elected president this past year. In his leadership role, he has increased the visibility of the SGA with our students, the university administration, and the system office, and was responsible for increasing the number of active SGA senators and representatives. He has expanded the SGA engagement with students and completely revamped the organization, providing a solid foundation for the success of this most important student organization for years to come.”\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
