The letters list the accommodations, i.e. extended time on exams, but they do not disclose your disability. Students may decide to disclose their disability to their faculty members individually. Students can drop into the engaging Career Studio during the school year where a career-peer leader is available to kick-start the process of career exploration, finding experiences, creating personal marketing materials, and activating employment opportunities. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/careersuccess\/\">Career Success Center<\/a> studio is located on the Westside campus in the Campus Center, 3rd Floor, Suite 300 and is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. \u2013 5 p.m. or after hours by appointment. Career Success Center experts work extensively with students, faculty, businesses, employers, and other regional resources to enable professional and personal opportunities.\u00a0 Freshman through Seniors can benefit from exploration tools and career learning through a suite of new Career Education classes. The Career Success Center also provides many useful workshops and engaging career events throughout the year, all of which can help students provide context for what they are learning in the classroom. Career Peer Leaders are well-prepared students who can be available on both campuses to co-explore and support career basics. The full-time staff is available to faculty, students, and student organizations for specialized workshops and relevant job\/career\/vocation support programs, and manage the university internship programs<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>When should I start using services available at the Career Success Center?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>RIGHT NOW! Freshman are strongly encouraged to visit, grab a snack, pick up some tips at the Studio and stop by a traveling \u201cLevel-up Your Career\u201d Bar. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/careersuccess\/\">Career Success Center <\/a>can help students through the entire career-readiness process, including exploring career fields and majors, understanding and developing employment skills, engaging with employers\/mentors, and even finding jobs (on campus and off-campus). \u00a0The staff provides a full range of career and employment-related products, online tools, job search support and other services to help students progress confidently toward graduation. Your career readiness\u00a0<u>must<\/u> start early in your academic career, and it will continue throughout your life!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What are the new Career Education classes all about?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WCSU now has three brand new credit-bearing classes on Career Education. They are half semester, 1.5 credit classes with no prerequisites and can be taken any point while at WCSU. Multiple classes can be taken in one semester. These unique classes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>CED 110: Designing Your Life<\/u>. Created to provide students with the basics and practice of concepts that will help them develop a constructive and effective approach to design their vocation. \u00a0Modeled from curriculum from Stanford University, the course uses design thinking methodology, integrating the designer mindsets of curiosity, reframing, radical collaboration, awareness, and prototyping. It offers frameworks, tools, a community and network of peers, mentors, and others who can support the design, reflection, and execution of life prototypes.<\/li>\n<li><u>CED 120: The Employment Process<\/u>.\u00a0This course will guide students through the process, techniques, and tools available to help them acquire great jobs and\/or internships. Students will learn how to identify and leverage their skills, present their talents and personal brand, learn to navigate the complex job acquisition process, and open themselves up to new opportunities for growth. Through an examination of personal mission and design of real career preparation experiences and processes, students will discover, evaluate, and demonstrate their effectiveness toward the life they want to lead.<\/li>\n<li><u>CED 130: Workplace Professionalism for Career Success<\/u>. Learn to build and refine the essential skills that employers demand while on the job. The purpose of this course is to provide students with a reflective dive and an engaging platform to jump into the principles, concepts and practices that help people adapt to and thrive in their work circumstances. Using the concept of career-readiness as defined by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE): \u201c\u2026 the attainment and demonstration of requisite competencies that broadly prepare college graduates for a successful transition into the workplace\u201d, this course will guide students through their identification, presentation and future leverage of the following ten essential professional skills recommended by WCSU: Communication, Critical Thinking, Teamwork, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Adaptability, Technology, Professionalism, Self-awareness, Leadership, Compassion. It will also help students drive direct connections with employers and alumni.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>When should I plan to do an internship?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/careersuccess\/\">Career Success Center <\/a>manages the university\u2019s general elective internship program which can play an essential role in developing work skills and facilitating a career journey. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/careersuccess\/start-an-internship\/\">The process starts here.<\/a> We can help students navigate the internship process as they near the 45-credit mark; an internship is usually paid and for credit (1-12 free-elective credits). Students are not mailed bills. Fall bills are due July 15<sup>th<\/sup>. Spring bills are due December 15<sup>th<\/sup>. Payment for winter and summer sessions are due upon registration.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What are my payment options?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Online:<\/em> With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/ezpay\/\">TouchNet<\/a> you can securely pay your bill online using your debit or credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover or American Express) or by electronic check using your checking or savings account. Credit card payments will be subject to a 2.85% \/ $3 minimum convenience fee. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/ezpay\/\">Login to TouchNet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mail:<\/em> You can mail in a check or money order to\u00a0WCSU, ATTN: Cashier\u2019s Office at 181 White Street, Danbury, CT 06810. Make checks payable to Western Connecticut State University and include your student ID number in the memo section of the check for faster processing. Payments that return from your bank will result in a $20 fee. All full- and part-time students should be covered through their own health insurance. For damages to personal property, please check with your own homeowners insurance first. If you are considering filing additional claims, please know that Western Connecticut State University is an agency of the State of Connecticut, and as such claims by individuals against the university for alleged losses and damages are barred by the Doctrine of Sovereign Immunity. A person claiming injuries or damages as a result of state action must pursue a claim through the State of Connecticut\u2019s Office of the Claims Commissioner. Or, you can find this <a href=\"http:\/\/wcsu.edu\/csi.\">document online<\/a>. In there you will find the \u201cProcedures for Establishing a Recognized Organization.\u201d Once your organization has been approved by the SGA, the organization\u2019s officers need to complete training with the Center for Student Involvement before being fully recognized. You will be assisted by the CSI Staff\u00a0throughout the process.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Commuter Students<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>I am a commuter student. How do I get involved?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are a few things you should do and need to be aware of in order to stay connected:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If you are new to WCSU, attend the commuter orientation session and actively take part in everything else. You are just as much a part of\u00a0WCSU as the residential students.<\/li>\n<li>Attend Clubs Carnival. Every fall during Welcome Week (and sometimes also in January) the current clubs hold a carnival to recruit new members. Find out about them and sign up.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you sign up for your\u00a0WCSU email account and check it regularly. The Commuter Student Organization (CSO) will probably send an\u00a0e-newsletter to that address (as will some of the faculty regarding your classes).<\/li>\n<li>Consider joining the Commuter Student Organization (CSO). Check the Events Calendar on the home page, go to Banner and check out the announcements in WestConnduit, or set pages such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/wcsu.edu\/coffeehouse\/\">\u201cCoffeehouse\u201d\u00a0website<\/a> as your favorites.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">Find out what clubs are active on campus and let them know you are interested in joining. You can also check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/recreation\/\">Recreation webpage <\/a>for information on club sports or stop by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/studentlife\/\">Center for Student Involvement<\/a> (CSI) in SC 227 to ask questions or to start your own club.<\/li>\n<li>Look for fliers all around campus. Clubs are always using fliers to advertise their events, many of which are free and open to all students.<\/li>\n<li>Talk to other students. Go to the commuter lounges in the Student Center and hang out, strike up conversations. WCSU is full of commuter students, so it shouldn\u2019t be hard to find someone who feels just like you do.<\/li>\n<li>Ask questions. Can\u2019t find anything you are looking for? Not sure what\u2019s out there? We are here to help you.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Confidentiality (FERPA)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What is the Student Consent Form and when\/why should I fill one out?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a general rule, staff at the university will not discuss your grades, attendance record, bill, or financial aid information, etc. with any third party unless we have your permission to do so (certain exceptions apply). While we prefer that students handle all of their affairs relating to their life at the university themselves, there may be certain instances when you may want university staff to be able to talk to your parents (i.e. if they pay your bills, you fall ill, or study abroad). How do we promote it?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The first stop for promoting your event should be the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/studentlife\/csi-staff\/\">Center for Student Involvement<\/a> (CSI) in SC 227. They can help you with the creation and distribution of flyers. For all promotions, a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/wow\/events\/community\/add\">WOW New Event Submission Form<\/a> <\/strong>must be completed at least two to three weeks in advance of the event. You might get permission from your instructor for an incomplete grade in an individual class that would allow you extra time to make up the work missed, or you may get permission from the instructor to withdraw from a course even if the withdrawal deadline has passed. If you cannot catch up in any of your classes, you may want to complete a \u2018Leave of Absence\u2019 form (LOA) to get all \u2018W\u2019 grades rather than failing grades. Filing the LOA form would allow you to return to WCSU after a break of one or two semesters. If you do not plan to return to WCSU, you complete a \u2018Withdrawal\u2019 form. So, see your Resident Assistant (RA), who\u2019s prepared to hear all about it from you. They\u2019ll listen to your concerns and work with you on options to help you communicate better with your roommate, offer to mediate, and, barring any resolution, to work with your RD to help you switch rooms if that\u2019s the final solution.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Am I guaranteed housing?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are a student who currently lives on campus and you pay your housing deposit by the published due date (usually late March) <strong><i>and<\/i><\/strong>\u00a0fully participate in the housing selection process, we will commit to you. New students to the university must pay their housing deposit, complete an application and provide proof of having had a meningitis vaccine within the past 5 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What happens if I turn in my housing deposit late?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are a student who currently lives on campus and you turn in your housing deposit late, you will have to fill out the online application via the housing portal and self-select your assignment based on availability. Housing is not guaranteed. If you are a new student who turns in your deposit after May 1<sup>st<\/sup>, you will self-select a room once your file is complete (application, deposit, and proof of a meningitis vaccine within the last 5 years).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Are the residence halls co-ed?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At WCSU, all of our residence halls are co-ed. Our Midtown halls are co-ed by floor or section and our Westside halls are co-ed by apartment. On the Midtown campus, this means that floors or sections alternate between male and female.\u00a0 Co-ed floors have female-designated and male-designated bathrooms. \u00a0Double rooms are occupied by two students of the same gender (sex). On our Westside campus, this means the apartment\/suite could alternate between male and female, where one apartment could be for females, while the apartment next to it could be for male students.\u00a0 (Upperclassmen may opt to live in gender neutral suites\/apartments. Transfer students may qualify if they have completed one full semester at the University prior to studying abroad.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Where may I study abroad?<\/strong> <\/em><br \/>\nWCSU participates in ISEP (<a href=\"https:\/\/wcsu.edu\/isep\/\">International Student Exchange Program<\/a>)\u00a0offering programs in more than 50 countries. We also have various short courses abroad led by\u00a0WCSU faculty.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Can only certain majors study abroad?<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nNo, the programs are not major specific and are open to all fields of study. Why is WCSU pursuing the incident?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Often students allege that staff members have assured them that they will not get in trouble. The fact is that only the Office of Judicial Affairs has the authority to determine whether or not a violation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/judicial-affairs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/173\/2020\/08\/2.1-StudentCodeofConduct.pdf\">Student Code of Conduct <\/a>exists and how this incident will be pursued.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What happens if a student fails to attend a disciplinary meeting or hearing?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is a violation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/judicial-affairs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/173\/2020\/08\/2.1-StudentCodeofConduct.pdf\">Student Code of Conduct<\/a> not to show for a disciplinary meeting or hearing. In addition to the alleged violation for the reason for\u00a0the meeting, a student will also face additional charges for not showing.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>I\u2019ve been told that I\u2019ve had a hold placed on my account by Judicial Affairs: What does this mean? How do I get it removed?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/judicial-affairs\/\">Office of Judicial Affairs<\/a> places holds on a student\u2019s account when that student has failed to complete a required judicial sanction by the mandated deadline. Both the sanction and its deadline are clearly listed in the meeting outcome\/hearing outcome letter. This hold can only be removed with the completion\u00a0of the sanction. Please contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/judicial-affairs\/\">Office of Judicial Affairs <\/a>if you have questions regarding the hold on your student account.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>My Judicial Outcome Letter says that I will be removed from the residence halls. <\/em><em>Can I still attend class? What are my options?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unless the meeting\/hearing outcome letter states otherwise, a student who has been removed from the residence halls, regardless of the duration of that sanction, is not only allowed to attend classes, but strongly encouraged to do so. For short-term residence hall separations, it is recommended that the student commute, arrange temporary lodging with a close friend\/family member, or take advantage of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/orientation\/travel\/\">local hotels in Danbury.<\/a> For long-term residence hall separations, it is recommended that the student explore finding alternative lodging in the Greater Danbury area.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>I\u2019ve been suspended\/expelled from the university. What does this mean? What are my options?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Suspension<\/em> &#8211; A student who has received suspension as a judicial sanction has been temporarily separated from all universities within the Connecticut State University System. If you cannot contact your professors yourself, call the Office of Student Affairs at 203-837-9700 to explain your situation. A confidential email will be sent to your professors on your behalf, informing them of the amount of time you will be absent. If you are out for more than five days, it is your responsibility to submit a doctor\u2019s note to Health Services, which will follow up the initial, unofficial email with an official notification. Be aware that not all professors excuse absences even if they were due to an illness or accident.\u00a0 If you are going to miss too many classes, it might be hard for you to catch up with your work. In that case, you should find out whether it is possible to get an incomplete grade for the course or if you can withdraw from one or more courses and continue with others.
