DESCRIPTION:WCSU MFA Visiting Artist Lecture with Tom Burckhardt\, Painter\n\n\n\nVisiting Artist Lecture with\nTOM BURCKHARDT\, PAINTER\nWed\, Nov 13\, 2024\, 11:00 am\n\nVisual & Performing Arts Center\nWCSU\, Westside Campus\, room 144\nFree & Open to the Public\nLimited Seating Available\n \nTom Burckhardt was born in New York City and remains a lifelong resident. He graduated with a BFA in painting from SUNY Purchase in 1986 and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture that same year. His work explores the intersection of abstraction and figuration\, playing with perception to discern forms and figures within multiple\, abstracted layers. \n \nTom’s work has been shown in over thirty solo exhibitions and countless group shows throughout the U.S. and abroad\, including McNay Art Museum\, Hudson River Museum\, Knoxville Art Museum\, Bowdoin Museum\, and the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum. His most recent solo show of paintings was at George Adams Gallery\, NYC\, in February 2024. Other NYC gallery shows include Tibor De Nagy\, Pierogi\, DC Moore\, and Caren Golden Fine Art\, among others\, with several shows at Gregory Lind Gallery in San Francisco. \nIn 2016\, he participated in the Kochi Muziris Bienalle in Kerala\, India with an installation piece entitled “Studio Flood”. \n \nTom is the recipient of numerous grants and awards\, including three grants from the NY Foundation for the Arts\, a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant\, a Guggenheim Foundation Grant\, and two Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grants. He was awarded two artist in residencies at Yaddo Foundation in 2024 and 2019. He was also an artist in residence at Pepper House\, Kochi\, India\, in 2020\, as well as a resident faculty at Skowhegan in 2007. Currently\, Tom teaches part-time at SUNY Purchase. \n@tomburckhardt

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the closing reception of the exhibition “Color and Light\,” Sun\, March 2\, at 12:00 pm.\n\n\n\nCOLOR + LIGHT\n \nOn view Feb 6–March 2\, 2025\nClosing Reception:\nSunday\, March 2\, 2025\n12:00–2:00 pm\n\nFritz Horstman\nAnne Lindberg\nGreg Lock\nPete Mauney\nColleen McGuire\nJulia Rooney\n \nPost-Impressionist artist George Seurat’s most famous painting “A Sunday on La Grande Jatte” inspired Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Sunday in the Park with George” WCSU Dept. of Theatre Arts’ spring production (Feb. 21 – March 2). The exhibition Color and Light\, presented in conjunction with the production\, features six visual artists whose works are concerned with the interaction of color and the phenomenon of light. The exhibition will include artworks in cyanotype\, drawing\, painting\, photography\, stop motion animation\, and video. The title Color and Light is derived from a song in Act I; a “sneak peek” performance of the song by cast members is planned as part of the reception on March 2. \nThe Gallery at the Visual & Performing Arts Center is dedicated to presenting professional\, contemporary art exhibitions and cultural programming.
