PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE CONCERT
On Monday, Dec. 6, the WCSU Percussion Ensemble will perform at 8 p.m. in Ives Concert Hall. The performance will be free and open to the public; donations to the music department will be accepted. For more information, call x78350.
On Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 4:30 p.m. in Room 017 of Higgins Annex, the WCSU Office of AccessAbility Services will hold a workshop to explain the types of accommodations and services available to students. Information provided will include the differences between accommodations in high school and college; the types of classroom, housing and campus accommodations, services and assistive technology available; how to request accommodations and services; and more. ONE-ACT PLAY FESTIVAL
The WestConn theatre arts department will present one-act plays directed by students at 8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 8 and 9; and at 6 and 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, in the Reimold Theatre in Berkshire Hall. For more information, call the Berkshire Theatre Box Office at x78732.
On Thursday, Dec. 9, student interns in WestConn's health promotion and exercise sciences department will present an overview of their internship experiences from noon to 2 p.m. on the first floor of Warner Hall. The event will be free and the public is invited. For more information, call x78612.
On Thursday, Dec. 9, WestConn's Center for the Study of Culture and Values will host a bus trip to the Onassis Cultural Center in New York for a guided tour of "Heroes: Mortals and Myths in Ancient Greece." The bus will depart at 1:30 p.m. from outside of University Hall and will return at approximately 8:30 p.m. The trip and tour will be free and open to the public; reservations are required and there are a limited number of seats on the bus. It is funded by a grant from the foundation of Brookfield industrialist and philanthropist Constantine "Deno" Macricostas and his wife Marie. On Thursday, Dec. 9, WestConn will present the Midtown Coffeehouse at 8 p.m. in Alumni Hall. The coffeehouse will include open mic performers at 8 p.m., followed by the featured act, comedian Chris Doucette, at 9 p.m. Admission will be free and the public is invited. The WCSU Opera will perform the annual holiday classic "Amahl and the Night Visitors" at 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, and on Saturday, Dec. 11, at 3 and 8 p.m, in Ives Concert Hall. For tickets and information, call x78499 or go to wcsu.edu/tickets.
PLANETARIUM SHOW AND TELESCOPE VIEWING
On Saturday, Dec. 11, WestConn will host a 4:30 p.m. planetarium show, followed by telescope viewing of the moon, Jupiter, M31, Double Cluster, Gamma Andromedae, Pleiades and Mira from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Westside Observatory and Planetarium. HOLIDAY JAZZ CONCERT
On Sunday, Dec. 12, the WCSU Holiday Jazz concert will be held at 3 p.m. in Ives Concert Hall. The program will feature Frankensax, led by Andrew Beals; the WCSU Jazz Ensemble, led by Dave Scott; and the WCSU Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Jamie Begian. The program will include a mix of jazz classics and holiday music such as "Sleigh Ride" and "Walking in a Winter Wonderland." The university has created three parallel parking spaces for handicapped lift vans in the parking lot on the north side of White Hall to accommodate students and others who travel with wheelchairs. Before the designation of these spaces, people driving lift vans often could not park near the building’s wheelchair-accessible entrance. In addition, five new spaces have been added to the parking lot for use by individuals who drive vehicles with handicapped stickers.
CSUS Trustees Awards in Teaching and Research
Information is now available regarding the competition for the 2010-2011 CSUS Trustees Awards in Teaching and Research. All materials are posted online at ct.edu/faculty/teaching-research/. Tenured and non-tenured assistant and associate professors are eligible for these awards. The deadline for all complete nominations and applications to the local review committee at WCSU is Dec. 11, 2010.
Child Care Center Openings
A few spaces are available in the WCSU Child Care Center, an NAEYC accredited early childhood program for children 3 to 5 years old. Please contact the Child Care Center Director Bruni Edwards, at x78733 for further information. The WCSU Child Care Center is located in Alumni Hall, lower level.
ING Financial Adviser on campus
WestConn’s ING Financial Adviser, Marilyn Timbers, will be on campus this fall to conduct employee retirement counseling sessions or to discuss your retirement portfolio. Sessions will be held in the Student Center, Room 228 on Dec. 1 and Dec. 28.
IRB Meeting Schedule and Important Changes
Starting immediately, the WCSU IRB is moving to an electronic submission system. Please send completed proposals (see guidelines) as an attachment to IRB@wcsu.edu. HUM-1 forms with signatures may also be emailed as pdf files to the same address. Alternatively, hard copies of completed HUM-1 forms may be delivered to Martha Palanzo in the Office of Grant Programs, Warner Hall 321. Note that there is a new HUM-1 form that must be used. Please check the IRB website at wcsu.edu/irb/.
Fall 2010 / Spring 2011 Meetings
