Professor Galina Bakhtiarova holds her Bachelor’s degree in English and Spanish and Master’s in translation from Moscow Linguistic University, and Master’s and Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. At WestConn, she teaches classes in Spanish language, literature and culture and leads a study program to Spain each summer. Her dissertation and unpublished manuscript explore the complex relationship between Spanish, Catalan and Caribbean culture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries through music, literature, and cinema.
She writes on nineteenth and twentieth century Spanish, Catalan and Latin American music, songs, film, cuisine, tourist attractions and more. In recent years, her interest in cultural studies has lead her on a variety of academic endeavors, such as the exploration of cultural heritage in Ecuador; women artists and writers associated with surrealism in the Hispanic world; the transformation of culinary culture in Spain and the legacy of Spanish immigrants in the United States. Her essays and book chapters have appeared in Il Capitale Culturale. Studies on the Value of Cultural Heritage, (UNIMC, 10/2020); International Journal of Arts and Sciences, 10 (2), (December 2017); Athens Journal of Humanities and Arts (April, 2017); Oceanide – Journal of the Spanish Society for the Study of Popular Culture (SELICUP, 2014); Film International (Intellect, UK, 2014) and in Interdisciplinary Humanities (2014). She also published in Journal of Transatlantic Studies, Quaderns-e del Institut Català d’Atropologia , Music in Art, Memoria colonial e inmigración: La negritud en la España posfranquista (2006), Transatlantic Conflict and Consensus (2008) and Sex and Sexuality in a Feminist World (2009), among others.
She has received multiple AAUP CSU grants for her research and was the recipient of the Connecticut State University System-wide Trustees Teaching Award in 2011.
