As part of a series of Art Faculty Talks, the Department of Art presents its next speaker, Elyse Shapiro, Adjunct Professor of Photography. Shapiro began her career as a photojournalist in 1974 working for the Westport News and affiliated newspapers of the Brooks Community Newsgroup lasting more than 17 years. For the past 20 years, she has been a photography teacher (The Silvermine Guild in Norwalk and Adjunct Professor at WCSU), as well as a professional commercial photographer, with a primary focus on weddings, portraiture, and corporate and family events. As importantly, she continues to explore new approaches to composition, technique, subject matter, perspectives, the camera, and the themes (new and reoccurring) that embody her work.
Her approach to photography was shaped by years as a photojournalist. “Truthful with respect for the integrity of the subject. Recognizing the moment in a fraction of a second when the disparate parts come together forming an image that communicates maximum potential.” Today her work is more personal with subjects more to her own choosing and her technique more varied. She explores qualities in her subjects that go beyond surface characteristics; a more studied approach. “What interests me most is what lies in front or behind the plane of focus and how the layers of light, color, and form play off each other and the frame that contains them.”
