The Department of Writing & Literature houses multiple degree programs in Creative Writing, Business & Technical Writing, Journalism & Public Relations, English, and English Education, as well as the university’s General Education program in Composition and the Writing Center.
The program in Creative and Professional Writing prepares students for professions as writers, editors, publishers, and a wide array of careers in nonprofits, communication, or any field where the ability to communicate well in writing is essential. WCSU undergraduate students enjoy the unique opportunity of automatic admission to the terminal degree program immediately upon completion of their WCSU undergraduate Writing degree.
The highly rated, low-residency Master of Fine Arts in Creative and Professional Writing is the only MFA program in the country that trains students in one creative genre and one practical field and allows students the flexibility of studying from home while also enjoying rich community experiences at our Dublin residency, our Summer Residency at Boyds Mills, and our January residency in Danbury.
The English program prepares students for success in a wide variety of careers in fields where knowledge of texts, historical contexts, written and oral communication, and the powers of analysis and critical thinking are vital. While many of our students find themselves well-prepared to teach English in elementary and secondary schools and to pursue graduate study in English, the English major prepares students for success in any field.
Most students at WCSU take at least one Composition course (WRT 101) as part of their General Education requirements. Information on Composition goals, outcomes, and faculty are provided here.
