Sept 21st, 2026: International Day of Peace

On September 21st we will begin our “International Day of Peace” activity using the “One Thousand Origami Cranes” story as a powerful and engaging way to foster peace, reflection, and community. This activity will begin on Sept 21st and will end in the spring of 2027 with a 1000 Origami Cranes display in the Writing Center.

“One Thousand Origami Cranes for Peace”

The story of “one thousand origami cranes” is rooted in Japanese tradition, where it is believed that folding one thousand cranes grants a wish, often related to peace and healing. The story of Sadako Sasaki, a young girl who folded cranes while suffering from leukemia caused by the Hiroshima atomic bombing, has become a symbol of peace and the anti-nuclear movement.

To help the Writing Center create our One Thousand Origami Cranes display, an Origami Crane Folding station will be available throughout the fall and spring semesters where students can drop in to learn how to fold origami cranes.

At the station, students can write messages of peace, hope, and healing on their crane or a small piece of paper that can be attached to the cranes or displayed alongside them. Students may share personal reflections, poems, or essays related to peace at Crane Station.

During the spring of 2027, we will dedicate our cranes!
