Global and Intercultural Fluency

“Diversity is having a seat at the table. Inclusion is having a voice and belonging is to have that voice be heard.”

How can I demonstrate my Global and Intercultural Fluency skills to a potential employer?

Diverse workforces have been, and will continue to be a valuable asset to employers. You can showcase your ability to work in these diverse environments by learning new languages and engaging with local cultural centers. At the Career Success Center, we can also assist you personally with developing and demonstrating this competency.

Sample Activities

Example

You value, respect and learn from diverse cultures, races, ages, genders, sexual orientations, abilities and religions.

"I believe it's crucial to be educated on what diversity means and to understand concepts that surround diversity and inequity issues. Because of this, I make an effort to place myself in spaces that may advert from my norm. I go to cultural events outside of my own, attend info sessions and also volunteer in communities that are distinct from my own. I do this to learn about and from other cultures. I think stepping outside of my comfort zone helps me to gain a new perspective that simultaneously allows me to appreciate, respect and learn from diverse cultures, races, ages, genders, etc."

You show acceptance, inclusiveness, sensitivity, and the ability to interact respectfully with all people and you understand and value individuals' differences.

"Having everyone together and respecting of one's beliefs can make a positive difference in their work performance."

You seek global cross-cultural interactions and experiences that enhance one’s understanding of people from different demographic groups and that leads to personal growth.

"As an international salesmen for my company I travel to Portugal and Spain to promote and sell our services. Before I was able to work in this position I had to become proficient in Spanish and Portuguese as well as learn about their cultures. I spent a lot of my vacation days in both countries and learned a lot before I got this job."

You actively contribute to inclusive and equitable practices that influence individual and systemic change.

"Working in human resources I have to manage a lot of interpersonal problems between employees. When issues of culture or ethnicity pop up we have various exercises for them to practice that help them to understand each others cultural differences and similarities. In serious cases we even bring in outside professionals or programs."
