With a PhD in Composition Studies from the University of Memphis as well as a Master’s Degree in TESOL from SEMO, Don has taught in higher ed. for over 23 years—teaching ESL in Japan as well as Composition theory, pedagogy, and practice throughout the Midwest, Midsouth, and South. Don has also designed, developed, and directed writing centers at The University of Memphis and SUNY Polytechnic where he was also the WPA. His dissertation—an historical examination of the development of writing centers through the lens of Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT)—identified system contradictions and their mediation. In doing so, Don defined the epochal movements between 1887-today that have shaped our modern conceptualization of the writing center.
Hello! My name is Alexis, and I'm a sophomore majoring in Political Science with a minor in History. Whenever I have free time I like to watch movies, listen to music, and play video games. I'm currently taking a creative writing class to explore and practice different forms of writing! My favorite thing about writing is the wide spectrum of it, I believe there's something for everyone. I'm excited to be able to help students learn, grow, and find confidence in themselves and their writing!
Hi there! My name is Bridget, and I am a Creative Writing major with a minor in History. I love writing because there are so many different ways to express a message, and I find it fun to pick apart and analyze each piece to see what makes them work and how they can apply to my own writing. I also love music, and I am in the process of learning acoustic guitar. I do some visual art as well, but when I’m not creating something, I can usually be found outside poking at bugs under logs and spending time with the trees. I believe that inspiration can come from anywhere; I fell into my major because of a high school Marine Biology class and some bad writing in video games. My strength lies in editing, but I love to bounce ideas back and forth with others to get the ball rolling on a piece. My favorite author is Kurt Vonnegut, and my favorite bands are Redbone, Supertramp, and Steam Powered Giraffe. I am so excited to connect with my peers and grow as a writer alongside them! “I want to stand as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all the kinds of things you can't see from the center.” — Kurt Vonnegut
Hello All! My name is Carmen; I am an Anthropology/Sociology major. I’ve always enjoyed writing because it allows me to get all of my thoughts on paper. I enjoy helping others at the writing center because I like to hear their thoughts and ideas about writing while also seeing how they express their thoughts and ideas through their writing. In my free time, I love to spend time with my friends and family, and I sometimes volunteer at the Public Danbury Library. I also enjoy reading; my favorite genres are Murder Mystery and romance, although I’ve recently been trying to dabble in autobiographies. Through my work as a CEC, I hope to inspire my students to have new ways of thinking about their writing and help them develop new writing strategies and/or techniques.
Hello! My name is Emily Chase. I am a Junior English major and a Communications minor. I’ve been working as a Composition Embedded Consultant for a year now, and I have loved all the positive experiences I have gained from working with Freshmen. I write a lot of literary essays based on the books I read, which has greatly assisted me in my understanding of the rhetorical situation when analyzing texts. I love to bake, take walks, watch movies, build Lego flowers, and spend time with my friends and family. I am so excited to be working at the Writing Center for another semester!
Hello, I’m Emily and I’m a chemistry major. As such, I have plenty of experience in writing detailed lab reports and therefore I’m well acquainted with the writing process and effectively communicating concepts and ideas. One of my favorite aspects of writing is how it unifies interests of all disciplines by exploring and spreading ideas and by extension sparking new and innovative ideas in its readers. Outside of WCSU, I am an assistant swim coach, lifeguard and swim instructor and in my free time I enjoy listening to music and podcasts, dabbling in foreign languages, reading, and watching pro-wrestling.
Hi, I'm Gallagher! I am a sophomore Media Arts major planning on going into Game Design. I love to write poetry and other more creative forms of writing but can help with any type of writing at any stage in the process. I love analyzing more creative genres such as poetry, songwriting, and narrative works. Less professional writing can have so many unique choices in how a piece flows and is structured and creates a super interesting final product. I love analyzing an author's voice and how their unique perspective is expressed in their writing. Much of my love of video games and music comes from the stories and writing of the mediums.
Hey! My name is Jackie, and I am one of the CEC’s this year. I'm a second-year business management major, and Kathwari Honors student. Taking a composition course during my first semester at WCSU influenced the way I perceive writing and allowed me to grow a better appreciation for the craft. I have experience helping students from my other job as a music instructor for a local high school. While at school I enjoy doing volunteer work in the community and with the honors program. Some of my interests outside of school include gardening, traveling, and DC comics. I can’t wait to meet and help you all at the Writing Center!
Hello everyone, my name is Kenny, and I am a sophomore majoring in Finance. I aspire to be a financial advisor, helping as many people as possible achieve their dreams and enjoy a fulfilling retirement. In my free time, I read and watch videos about investing, budgeting, and the NFL as I'm a NY Jets fan! Writing has always been an interest of mine, especially short form writing. It's a great way to reveal my personality and share my experiences. I am grateful and excited to help as many people as I can during my time as a CEC. Even if I can only help one person in this chapter of my life, I'll know it was all worth it. While being a CEC is primarily for writing, I'm happy to help with any questions you may have about your college career. I hope to see you soon at the Writing Center!
Hello! My name is Mateo and I'm a Music Education major with a focus in jazz. I am very passionate about music, along with other things related to creatively expressing yourself, such as writing! I believe that writing is art and it's something that I've been interested in and involved in for years. I am also very passionate about teaching. I love being able to pass on the knowledge I have to others in hopes of helping them to become better at whatever we may be working at. Outside of music and writing, I also love to spend time outdoors, cook & bake, play video games, read, and spend time with my friends and family!
Hello! My name is Matthew; I usually go by Matty. I am a history major and an anthropology minor; and I am extraordinarily happy to be of assistance to the students of WCSU. I absolutely love reading and writing because it's a form of artistic expression, as well as documented evidence of extraordinary people, places, events etc. Outside of my academic exploits, I enjoy spending time with loved ones and with nature. I practice archery in my spare time, and I like activities that are stimulating, whether they are intellectual or physical doesn't matter. I enjoy lending a helping hand as well, another reason why I am excited to be a part of the team going forward! "The love of books is among the choicest gifts of the gods"- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Hello! My name is Reagan and I'm a second-year student majoring in English. I'm a big fan of literary analysis and love to connect works to social issues and politics. I like to focus on an author's intended purpose with their audience and finding elements of persuasion in their work. I'm into sci-fi and watch a lot of analysis on video games and movies. I'm a bit of a horror movie buff, and in my free time I listen to a lot of music, play the bari-sax, and dance recreationally (which includes teaching 6–8-year-olds ballet, tap, and jazz dance). I'm excited to explore new topics and focus on writing skills!
Hi, I’m Seraphina (Sera for short)! I’m a transfer student majoring in Music Performance and I love to write music/poems, play guitar, and take long walks. When I’m not in the writing center or in class, you can always find me in the music building or exploring the Westside campus. As for my future, I plan to be a music educator and utilize the skills I’ve acquired from the writing center for my future students. My favorite part of writing is not only the critical thinking skills it teaches, but the creativity it inspires. I look forward to working with you and helping your own unique voice shine through your writing.
Hi, my name is Tessa. I am a sophomore majoring in Nursing and minoring in Holistic and Integrative Health. I am involved in a local sorority on campus, Kappa Chi Alpha, and also work as a FY Peer Mentor. Some of my interests include baking, painting, watching horror movies, hanging out with friends, and annoying my cats. Although I am a Nursing major, I love to write. Once I start a writing-related project, I don’t stop. I enjoy the overall writing process, grabbing the reader’s attention, and providing realistic details. Last semester, I took Creative Process and got to explore different genres of writing. My favorite had to be either non-fiction or fiction; I can’t choose. I look forward to meeting you all and helping you become a better writer!
Hi, I’m Thelma! I’m a Professional Writing major at WCSU, specializing in Technical and Business Writing, with a minor in English Studies. I also hold an Honors associate’s degree in English and am a member of the Kathwari Honors Society. At the Writing Center, I can assist with essay composition, paragraph structure, grammar, and provide feedback on both creative and technical writing. I’m a creative writer at heart, with a passion for science fiction and horror, but I enjoy working with all kinds of writing. When I'm not tutoring, I usually spend my time reading, hiking, or planning my next trip. I genuinely enjoy helping students build confidence in their writing and watching their work improve with each draft. “Definitions belong to the definers, not the defined.”-Toni Morrison. Hours: Wednesday 10 pm - 12 pm and Thursdays 12 pm - 1 pm
Hello! My name is Violet, and I am a sophomore nursing major here at WCSU. Outside of reading and writing, I enjoy painting and spending time with my friends. Here at the Writing Center, I can help with almost anything! I excel in writing scientific papers as well as argumentative essays. I love writing because I view it as its own form of art, the ability to paint a picture and tell a story with words is magical. I look forward to working with you throughout the year and helping you become a more confident writer!
