Well-known sculptor to visit Western

DANBURY, CONN. — The work of sculptor Alice Aycock has brought new energy and light to Western Connecticut State University’s Westside campus.

From 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 7, the university will hold a reception for the New York City artist. Aycock will discuss the concept and execution of “Acceleration,” the progressive design that hangs outside of the Westside Campus Center Ballroom. The piece is part of Connecticut’s Art in Public Spaces program.

A patchwork of bright colors, the 15 foot by 12 foot sculpture has illuminated yellow and orange neon wands, a satellite dish in one corner adorned with a coiled red wire cone and twinkling lights mimicking a starry night sky.

Aycock’s works can be found around the world — from the Museum of Modern Art in New York City to the Kunstmuseum in Switzerland. Since 2003, Aycock has been a member of the New York City Arts Commission and has also been appointed to the GSA’s National Register of Peer Professionals. She has taught at several colleges and universities, including Yale where she also served as the Director of Graduate Sculpture Studies. Since 1991, she has taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

For more information, contact the Office of University Relations at (203) 837-8486. To RSVP to the reception, call (203) 837-8460 or send an e-mail to mckayj@wcsu.edu by Dec. 2.
