WCSU to show documentary ‘Crossing Borders’
DANBURY, CONN. — Western Connecticut State University will show “Crossing Borders” at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6, in Room 125 of the Science Building on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury.
“Crossing Borders,” directed by German filmmaker Arnd Wächter, documents the story of four American and four Moroccan college students who travel together through Morocco. Through intimate discussions on race, religion and other socio-cultural issues between the students, the film probes into Muslims’ and Americans’ views of each other.
The documentary has received global attention, winning awards in United States film festivals including the Illinois International Film Festival and the Honolulu Film Festival. In Greece, the film was featured in the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival.
Assistant Professor of Social Sciences Dr. Damla Isik, who will attend the screening along with students from her anthropology class, emphasized the film’s significance. “What stood out for me is how relatable and important it would be for students at WestConn, especially those who are interested in studying abroad and cultural exchange programs,” she said.
Enthused about the documentary’s emphasis on culture, Isik said, “I was thrilled that it offers a difference perspective from the ‘clash of civilizations’ — where the East supposedly clashes with the West.”
A discussion with director Arnd Wächter and Isik will follow the documentary. The event is free and open to the public.
