2011 WCSU Alumni Association to hold golf tournament Sept. 26

DANBURY, CONN. — The Western Connecticut State University Alumni Association will hold its 26th Annual Golf Tournament to support scholarships for WCSU students on Monday, Sept. 26, at the Richter Park course in Danbury.

Registration for the annual tournament is open to the public, offering participants a daylong program including a round of golf, continental breakfast and lunch, and an awards reception following the end of play.

The tournament will be conducted in scramble format with a shot-gun start at 10 a.m. on the Richter Park Golf Course at 100 Aunt Hack Road in Danbury. Check-in and continental breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m., with lunch offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The tournament program will conclude with a player awards reception at 3 p.m. at the Café on the Green.

Registration is open to the public to reserve places for tournament play, at a cost of $175 per individual and $700 per foursome. The association also is offering a wide range of sponsorship opportunities; sponsor forms may be downloaded online from the Alumni Association “Golf Outing” page on the WCSU website.

“The Alumni Association Golf Tournament brings together WCSU alumni, faculty, staff and friends in the Danbury area for a great day of golf while also supporting an amazing cause — student scholarships,” WCSU Director of Alumni Relations Tammy Hammershoy noted. “The success of this event rests largely on community support and sponsorship. We welcome anyone who wants to play in or sponsor the tournament to join us.”

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the WCSU Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, which annually awards scholarships recognizing Western undergraduate students who have demonstrated exemplary academic achievement and participation in university and community activities. The fund also provides for the association’s annual award to a graduate student based on academic performance and financial need, and the annual May Sherwood Memorial Scholarship given to a senior in high academic standing with a major in education.

Recipients of Alumni Association scholarships for the 2011-12 academic year include Diana Bytyqi, Amanda Daley, Leah Firmender, James Heffner, Jacob Humerick, Douglas Otto Jackson, Vincent Kmetz, Kara Mendes, Amanda Nagurney, Bruna Oliveira, Kristopher Osborne, and Stephanie Wozniak.

The 2011 Alumni Association Golf Committee has been led by Al Mead as chairman and Ron Pugliese as honorary chairman. Other members of the committee include Neil Wagner, Jan Maria Jagush, Heather Stone, Theresa Eberhard Asch, Tom Crucitti, Joe Giaquinto, Eric Wellman, Mark Allen, and Jill Cook, along with Hammershoy and WCSU Director of Development Jane von Trapp.

“The Golf Committee has taken an active role in organizing our annual golf outing,” Mead observed. “With the support of many departments at WCSU, we expect another successful day. Raising funds for Alumni Association scholarships is what inspires the members of the committee to work hard.”
