Famed saxophonist to offer free noon concert
DANBURY, CONN. — Albert Regni, principal saxophonist with the New York Philharmonic, New York City Ballet Orchestras and formerly of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, will perform music for saxophone and piano at noon on Monday, Feb. 9, in Ives Concert Hall in White Hall on the Western Connecticut State University Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The concert will be free and the public is invited; donations to support the music department will be accepted.
Regni is expected to perform works by Creston, Marcello and others. He will be accompanied by Alan Farnham and Russell Hirshfield on piano.
In addition to his role with the New York Philharmonic and the New York City Ballet Orchestras, Regni’s symphonic appearances also have included the orchestras of Leningrad, Odessa, St. Petersburg, Israel, Baltimore, Los Angeles, The National Symphony and Rotterdam, Holland. His solo saxophone recordings, all of which have received international acclaim, include “Extended Saxophone” on CRI, “Three Dark Paintings” on Open Loop and “El Amor” on Sons of Sound.
Regni is an active participant in music for television, recordings and film and was recipient of a gold record and Grammy recognition for his work on the television series “Twin Peaks.” He has played on the soundtracks for more than 40 major motion pictures and more than 20 original Broadway cast albums as a concert and studio musician in New York City. The acclaimed television documentary “The Making of West Side Story,” conducted by Leonard Bernstein with Kiri Te Kanawa and Jose Carreras, features Regni as principal solo clarinetist.
In addition to his recording and concert work, Regni has been a visiting professor of saxophone at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.; associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin; saxophone professor at the The College of New Jersey in Ewing, N.J.; and presently is adjunct professor of saxophone at the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.
