DANBURY’S CASTLE: ARCHITECT E.G.W. DIETRICH AND HIS DESIGN OF THE HEARTHSTONE: For the past 10 years, Christopher Jend has researched architect E. G. W. Dietrich (1875-1924) documenting nearly 450 of his designs. In this presentation, Jend will discuss Dietrich’s body of work from eye-catching shingle style designs to his contributions to the arts and crafts style and place in context Dietrich’s design of the local Danbury landmark “the Hearthstone.” Constructed between 1895-99 for successful portrait photographer E. Starr Sanford, this remarkable castle-like structure is composed of local stone quarried on the site. Exhibiting historic Norman as well as Shingle Style and Arts and Crafts elements, this unique home served as a private residence until it was purchased by the City of Danbury in 1985. Despite being listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the house and outbuildings suffered from neglect, yet the stone walls still stand evoking romantic ideas of architecture and place.
